Quyen

Quyen's life began auspiciously enough as the only child of a successful first-generation Vietnamese-American family. She was everything they hoped she would be -- charming and pretty, funny and smart. She excelled at school and was well liked by both her classmates and teachers.

When she was a freshman in high school, things changed. Her house became one of turmoil as her parents' relationship began to erode. Shouting matches between her mother and father were common, and the two doctors were dirty fighters -- not physically, but with their words, secrets, and manipulations. Every family dinner became like trying to navigate through a landmine without setting off a bomb.

No one expected that bomb to be Quyen.

After a bad day at school where her dropping grades got her kicked out of the student leadership class, her parents began to snipe at each other and then her. Suddenly every dish, glass, and silverware lifted from the table and was flung, as if by so many invisible hands, around the room. Somehow Quyen was the only one unscathed. Luckily the lacerations on her parents were superficial and the physical scars would heal, but the family was in shards. The trip to the emergency room to get stitches resulted in Quyen being taken for psychological evaluation; it was the last time she saw her parents.

She lived the next four years at the Asylum. Her memories of the place are foggy at best and nonsensical and nightmarish at worst. She signed herself out of the Asylum at eighteen. She returned to Gray Harbor though her parents had divorced and gone their separate ways not long after what she can only think of as "The Incident."

While neither Quyen nor her parents made an effort to reconcile, there was at least a college fund and a trust fund -- she had enough to get herself through school, choosing not to become a doctor but instead a social worker for hospitals, to try to oversee as many cases as possible to keep as many people out of the hands of the Asylum as she can.

Since she's graduated, Quyen has also become a researcher of the Veil, to learn its secrets and to try to keep Gray Harbor safe.

The constants in this woman's appearance are dark, sparkling almond-shaped eyes, golden skin, thick black hair, and a petite figure at 5'3" and maybe 110 pounds soaking wet. If she's at work, she's dressed professionally in perfectly tailored suits, with her hair immaculately groomed and out of her face. She has a penchant for designer shoes with high heels that are not at all practical for a hospital setting, and foretell her arrival by a few moments thanks to their staccato footfalls. If she's not at the hospital or just coming off of work, the odds are at least some of her tattoos are showing and her hair tumbles around her face.. She favors jeans, a motorcycle jacket, and boots when she's not on the clock.
