**Dead Bodies: They're really interesting. But also not for casual conversation. But, um, also interesting so hit him up for them.
** Works the swing shift - you can usually find him at work overnight. He sleeps in the morning and early afternoon.
** Loves dogs. 10/10 would pet any dog ever. Owns a small fluffball but is always on the search for more to rescue. Will volunteer at the shelter.
** Homebrewing: He makes small batches for friends and family. He constantly is experimenting. Sometimes it works out - sometimes it doesn't.
** Conspiracy Theories: He'll happily listen to any and all - and he believes a few. Push the buttons, see what comes out.
** Loves his hat: He wears a felt black or white hat. It's just his thing. What is more interesting than a tipped hat at the right moment?
Born in Mesa, Arizona, Shawn had the nice run-of-the-mill childhood. Two parents who were equally supportive, and three younger siblings. He was fairly good at school and so the expectations were pretty high. Business school, med school, or law school - those were his only choices if he didn't want to disappoint his parents.
Shawn drifted through college before settling on pre-med and got all the way through it and a good part of med school! It turned out he was pretty good at putting things together! Sometimes he'd be right on the verge of failure and there would be a feeling of… heat. Then the wound before him would close. It happened too many times for Shawn to think it was just coincidence, though he never had a name for it.
Bedside manner though? That he was never particularly good at. Either he didn't talk enough or he talked TOO much - either way, he got several notations against him throughout his residency. Finally a mentor sat him down and tried to dissuade him from the profession altogether. Grasping at straws Shawn started looking at his options and realized that he had everything he needed to shift towards the dead instead of the living.
Thus after squeaking by in his degree he applied for a medical examiner fellowship in Arizona. That went much better, and his path was set. He enjoyed working with law enforcement, and even though he ~sucked~ at reassuring someone in a bed that they'll be totally okay, he did okay getting along with the officers he was able to engage with. A tiny seed of adventure curled in it soul so when the officers were offered firearms training, he often asked if he could come along and join. They said yes a a small hobby was born.
Well, it would have been, except that Shawn saw… things. Things he could never quite explain. Some of the cases never quite came together and no matter if it would derail the case, Shawn would put the details in his report. The kind people called him pathologically thorough, the people who asked for his resignation said he put too much stock in things that couldn't possibly be real.
Like, there was that one time he was absolutely sure that the body in front of him was dead. Then it started moving. Seriously, if that isn't a government conspiracy to create zombies, then what is?
Or the newly dead body that when he cut into it maggots fell out. That's NOT a suicide!
Then there was the one place he worked that was haunted as fuck. No one else could see the ghosts, but Shawn certainly could. He dug until he found the way that some of the autopsys had been mishandled and tried to expose it.
All of these ended with him being been asked for his letter of resignation before they fired his ass. Having zero proof on his side meant that he gave it - he needed a job more than to prove he isn't insane.
Gray Harbor is the latest in this list. Hopefully it goes a little better - Shawn is pretty tired of moving.
Tall and broad shouldered, Shawn would look more right in a woodsman's coat than a doctor's coat. Until one gets up close and realizes it is all bulk without muscle. Gray has started to creep into Shawn's ash blond hair and full beard. A wide forehead is only getting wider as his hairline slowly recedes from deep set blue eyes. Often he wears a felt had in black or brown upon his head.
