Captain George Reede's houseboat, lovingly dubbed The Surprise, is aptly named when one ventures inside; the motorized catamaran has been completely refurbished after the navy man's acquisition of it a few years ago, with enough improvements to transform it into a modern home above the water. At the bow of the vessel is a roomy deck where a few rattan chairs and a matching table are situated, for guests to sit and watch the waves, and dive off the prow into the blue waters of the bay. The upper deck holds additional seating around the main controls of the boat, with an open air bar built under a sturdy awning. The main deck holds the living space, renovated and improved upon by the man over time - a streamlined galley kitchen with clean lines and tasteful cabinetry flanks a relatively spacious sitting room which can convert to a dining room or a guest room, where electronics such as a modest high-definition smart TV and consoles that house wi-fi capabilities are kept out of sight by camouflaged panels that fold out whenever one wants to use them.
The inner hallway leads to a tiled shower, mirror and vanity, and the opposite door across from it leads into a pantry and laundry room, with a machine that doubles as a washer and dryer. Further still, past those two doors, is a bedroom suite, rendered larger than usual due to the captain's decision to combine two separate cabins together to make a single room. There is a queen-sized bed within, flanked by a bedside table. A roomy closet is built into the walls, as well as another mounted smart TV, and a small office area on the side, with open shelving for books and a desk for a computer, with room to spare for other documents. The entire houseboat features large, one-way windows, where one can look out and see the ocean views clearly, while affording those inside plenty of much-needed privacy.
With his notoriously independent daughter, Isabella, having returned home for the time being, the houseboat seems to have been relinquished to her for her use, though that isn't to say that the Reede house isn't close by; it can be glimpsed from either deck, up along the closest end of Bayside Road.
