Kelsey and Jaime stop in Boise for their first delivery, a haunted theater, and a 50s diner that simply can't compare to the Grizzly aesthetically. Literally - apples and oranges. Also flirting and a little cuddling.

The rest of the ride was punctuated with smatterings of conversation, listening to music, and eventually they arrived in Boise in time to offload the truck. Or, more appropriately, let the crew offload the truck while they kicked back and chilled until they could go. Then, they were free to go, and so it was off to the Egyptian Theatre to check it out before checking into the hotel. It's late afternoon/early evening, nd the sun is just beginning to set, which colors the sky in reds and oranges. "So, this is it," Jaime says as they pull up and find a place to park the cab of the truck. The trailer stayed back at the warehouse to be picked up in the morning.
Kelsey decided that she liked this truck driving thing. Well playing passenger at least. It was actually kind of interesting watching them unload the truck. She even made a few notes in her book about it. As they pulled up to the theater, Kelsey eyed it curiously. "Looks neat, like it could have on of those outdoor markets going on right in front of it and look totally natural." A little grin at the thought. "Seems like a niche kind of theater. Wonder if the decor inside will live up to current expectations." As she opened the door to climb out and stretch.
"Yeah," Jaime says in agreement as they walk up to the front of the theatre and take a look at it. "It looks so totally out of place for the area though." He grins. "So, what's supposed to be up with it? People get murdered? Fire trap people inside? Explosion? Poisoned popcorn?" He strolls across the parking lot at an easy amble, studying the building as they approach.
"It really does." Kelsey agreed with a chuckle, pulling her phone out so she could be ready to take pictures. "Well supposedly a long time projector guy died of a heart attack here and also potentially a lady from the 1920s." She explained, snapping a couple pictures of the interior. "Most of the projector guy - Joe - his activity is in the projector room and the balcony area. So we should maybe try to get close to there."
Jaime takes a look along as they stroll around, taking in the decor, and the way that things are set up. "Is there a tour or do we just kind of wander around unsupervised?" he asks, seeming more than content with just looking like he knows what he's doing rather than doing anything particularly official.
"I totally think we can wander. We're out of towners. If we're not supposed to, well we didn't know. I don't see anything saying we can't." Kelsey mused, taking a look around. There were a handful of workers milling about handling this or that. None seemed to pay the newcomers too much extra attention. "Let's head in to the theater part."
"Works for me," Jaime says and just wanders right on into the theatre, past the workers who are busy doing whatever it is that they're doing, and has no qualms about just looking like he knows what he's doing. He holds the door open for Kelsey and then looks around the room itself. "Wow, this place really does look Egyptian. Look at the ceiling? It looks like the sky, too. Like it's all open air." He wanders on up toward the balcony area which is supposedly one of the more haunted areas.
Kelsey follows suit, walking in to the theater when he holds the door open. They're totally here or a purpose. Like she comes here every week or something. A few more pictures are taken. "Wow, this is amazing." A little grin formed on her lips. Her head tilted up to look at the ceiling and then down towards the stage. "Check out those decorations. Awesome design, not disappointed." Turning to follow Jaime up towards potential ghost territory!
"Definitely worth stopping in, if just to see how they decorated the place," Jaime says as he wanders between the seats, going up to the back row and then plopping himself down in one, putting his feet up on the back of one of the seats in front of him, sprawling comfortably to just take the place in, and see if any ghosts decide to show up and tell him to put his feet down. "Not a bad choice, Kels."
"Agreed." Kelsey settles in a seat beside him, relaxing into it and closing her eyes. "Chairs are pretty comfy too." She was skeptical on if anything would actually happen, but keeping her ears open for any strange or out of place noises. "Thanks - I make a good one now and then." The blonde chuckled. She peeked one eye open as a little bit of a shiver ran through her. "Little chilly though. Does your place get cold when your mom is around?"
"Yep," Jaime grins, shifting a little in his seat comfortably. "I'd watch something here. Did you happen to notice if anything was even playing tonight?" He, admittedly, didn't even look. He was too busy checking to see if they could sneak in and poke around while no one was paying attention. "I mean, our place is drafty so it gets chilly no matter who's around." He flashes her a grin. "It's not exactly the best repaired place on Elm." Not the worst, either, though.
"That's fair." Kelsey laughed, pulling her flannel a little tighter. "Honestly? Totally didn't but there might be. Guess we might have to hang around a bit longer to find out." She mused, opening her eyes fully to focus on the ceiling. "I need to get my landlord off his ass to fix a few things for me before the whether gets bad again." Another chuckle trailing the end of that thought. "Hm...what's the best way to attract a ghosts attention?"
Jaime laughs and says, "Guess we can hang out til they kick us out or we get too hungry." He flashes her a sidelong grin and then lets his head rest back in the seat. "Hell if I know. Mom just sorta turns up whenever she feels like it. I'm not sure there's any one thing that bugs them. We know what bugs the projectionist guy? Or the chick? Your phone have any info on what might get them to show up?" He looks over at her. She was the one who had looked the place up, after all.
"Works for me." Kelsey agreed, returning the grin. She lifted her phone some. "Well the guy's name was Joe. Maybe if we just start calling his name?" She started tapping away to see if she could dredge up any more info. "Or mess around in the projector room but I'm pretty sure that would increase the potentially getting arrested meter." A light smirk playing at her lips. "Joe?" She called out then. "Hey Joe? You around?" Pro Ghost Hunter right here.
Jaime begins singing a little Hendrix, "Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand, goin' down to shoot my old lady, you know I caught her messin' 'round with another man. Hey Joe, I said, I heard you shot your woman down, you shot her down now, Hey Joe, I said, I heard you shot your woman down, shot her down to the ground, yes I did I shot her, you know I caught her messin' 'round, messin' round town.." His voice has a kind of low mellow quality as he sings without music while she pokes around on her phone to see if anything else comes up.
Kelsey was skimming through a page when Jaime started singing. Her head lifts to look at him, not interrupting yet. When he's finished, "Well that singing might do something - you're pretty good by the way. - Apparently during a Brothers Osborne concert 2 pieces of ceiling came down. Sooo...keep singing? Maybe we'll get a-" She stops abruptly, furrowing her brow. "Did you hear that?" It had sounded like a faint laughter coming from somewhere kind of nearish.
Jaime can't help but chuckle when she says to keep singing, though he glances over in the direction of the projection booth at the sound of the laughter. "Maybe someone's in the booth and didn't expect to get serenaded from the audience." Because he considers that way more likely than ghosts in the theatre. He glances over toward the booth and keeps singing again, doing the next verse."
"Maybe." Kelsey sounded doubtful. She turned in her seat to stare up at the booth while Jaime sang. Her eyes narrowed a bit as if trying to catch sight of movement. Halfway through the verse, Jaime would feel a fleeting touch on his shoulder. Maybe from Kelsey - though her hands, if he looked, were firmly on the back of the seat.
One brow ticks up a little bit at the touch, since Kelsey's hands are occupied. He glances over his shoulder, seeing nothing, and says, "You want to hear something in particular, you're going to have to tell me what you like, buddy. Otherwise you get whatever I decide to sing." He grins a little lopsidedly.
Kelsey looked over to Jaime, curious. "What kinda music you think he likes?" She asked. "I didn't hear anything. Maybe try another song? Maybe one of your original ones!" She suggested. "Maybe he wants to hear something new."
Jaime shrugs his shoulders and laughs, "I have no idea." But that doesn't stop him from singing at all. He tilts ihs head to one side and considers for a moment before he begins to sing one of his own songs, "There's a road through the hills covered over with leaves, no one's been down it since you and me, the sign's fallen by the riverbed, which ran with gold I've heard it said.." the lyrics kind of wind about, sounding more folksy than anything else as he sings.
Kelsey looked back up towards the projector room, sway just a little bit with the song he was singing. It wasn't the sort of stuff she would typically listen to, but Kelsey enjoyed it nonetheless. About halfway through the song, they would both hear laughter again. This time it sounded closer - but there was no one else besides them. A little light shone in her eyes. "You like that Joe? It was a pretty good song right? Jaime here's got talent." She grinned over to the man. "I liked that one."
When the laughter comes a bit nearer, Jaime switches again, this time to another cover, but this time a Jim Croce song, "If I had a box just for wishes, and dreams that had never come true, that box would be empty except for the memory of how they were answered by you, there never seems to be enough time to do the things you wanna do once you find them, I'm old enough to know, that you're the one I wanna go through time with." It would sound a little better if he had his guitar with him to accompany the singing, but he'd left it in the cab of the truck.
Kelsey glanced around to try and pin the source of the laughter as Jaime switched up songs again. Her gaze settles back on Jaime for a beat or two. Maybe about to say something else until she felt a tap on her own shoulder. Her head quickly turned to look behind her, but there was nothing there. "Keep singin' that one." She encouraged. She quickly started trying to bring her phone camera up just in case.
Jaime continues to sing Time in a Bottle while she goes to bring out her phone, grinning a little bit as he watches her more than anything else, since he can't see the ghost if it's there, but he seems entertained by the prospect that he's sitting in an old theatre singing for a ghost. And so he does, letting the song wind down to a close while she tries to snap a picture of Joe the Projectionist.
Kelsey took a few seemingly random pictures of different spots, trying to catch a picture of Joe. Or maybe even the lady. She doesn't see anything for herself but maybe a review of the camera later would reveal something. There's no more taps or laughter by the time the song Jaime's singing winds down. She giggled a bit, looking back to Jaime. "That was freaking cool. Think maybe we should get outta here? Food and see if we caught anything on camera?"
Once the pictures have stopped and the taps and laugher as well, Jaime just lets the song dwindle to a close and he grins, nodding his head. "Seems like we've entertained someone, regardless of who it was. That was kind of cool." He drops his feet to the floor and pulls himself up then, offering her a hand. "We'll have to check and see if there are any haunted places to drop by in Salt Lake while we're there. But for now, yeah, let's grab some food and head to the hotel. We need to check in."
Kelsey took Jaime's hand as she stood up and then stuffed the phone in her pocket. "Totally. I'll do some research when we're on the road tomorrow." She rocked on her heels briefly and then would follow Jaime down the balcony and out into the lobby of the theater. "There's probably some place to eat within walking distance. I'm game for anything food wise. So long as it's edible."
The theatre workers give them a litlte once over as they go by, and glance toward the theatre they'd just come out of. One slips in to take a look around, as though half expecting them to have vandalized the place, but seeing nothing amiss, doesn't chase them out of the building. Jaime wanders out onto the sidewalk and then glances up and down the street. "Looks like there's a chinese place over there, and there's a diner just a little ways back down the road that we passed on the way in. Got a preference?"
Once out on the sidewalk, Kelsey relaxes a touch since they don't have any employees chasing them down . She made a thoughtful noise, considering their options and then, "Can hardly ever go wrong with diner food yeah? Let's check it out. We can see how it compares to Grizzly." She chuckled, turning and starting to head off in that direction. "I'm glad I tagged along for this Jaime. It's been pretty fun so far."
Turning back up the street that they'd come down to reach the theatre, Jaime slides his hands into his pockets and strolls along at an easy pace. The diner wasn't far back, just a few blocks. It's one of those old-time silver pill-shaped affairs with a door right in the middle leading to a host's stand and on either side, a row of booths against the wwindows, and a counter with low stools covered in dark red vinyl. It has a black and white checked floor, and the walls are littered with black and white photographs from the 50s and 60s. Jaime holds open the door for her when they arrive and grins, "Yeah, me too. It's nice having the company."
"Oohh dang. This place looks like a blast from the past." Kelsey chuckled, stepping into the diner and looking around a moment. "I dig it. Grizzly has it's charms," The bears. That was about it. "But this place is definitely cool." As Jaime stepped inside, the hostess came up. "Welcome!" She gathered up two menus and led the pair to a booth. "What'll you drink?"
"Coke please." Is Kelsey's answer as she opened the menu up and browsed. "Also a strawberry milkshake." Because how could you not get a milkshake at a diner like this?
"Grizzly's is like straight out of Twin Peaks and totally fits Gray Harbor. This definitely fits the side of the road in the middle of Idaho," Jaime grins. "Way more than an Egyptian Theatre, anyway." Because this is way more expected fare. He follows the hostess over to the booth and lets Kelsey slide in first before he settles in opposite her and says, "Coffee shake, if you've got it. If not, chocolate." They do, in fact, have a coffee shake, and the waitress tells him that she'll make it a mocha and combine them together, which earns her another one of those broad smiles. "Thanks!"
"Very, very true. It's perfect for Gray Harbor like this is perfect for here." Kelsey agrees wholeheartedly. The waitress goes off to get their drinks and Kelsey peers at the menu again. "I think I might just go classic burger and fries." She decides, putting the menu to the side and relaxes against the table again "Never had a coffee shake before. Does it taste like a really thick iced coffee?"
"Or like semi-melted coffee ice cream," Jaime says. "You can have a sip if you want to try it." He continues to glance over the menu a little longer and then says, "I think I'm going with a patty melt and fries." Then he sets the menu aside and folds his arms on the table in front of him, leaning forward to study Kelsey.
"Sounds like it might not be too bad. Maybe I'll try some on a french fry." Because milkshakes and fries were a classic, obviously. Her dark blue eyes study him in turn and another smile is offered up. "So. Do you wanna see if my phone caught anything in the theater?" Quirking her brow. She won't move to get her phone unless he confirms that he wants to take a look. "At least we'll have a neat story to tell. Maybe two if we find a place in Salt Lake."
"Yeah, show me," Jaime says as she asks if he wants to see if they caught anything in the pictures. He gives her a nod and glances toward the phone, waiting to see whatever shows up. "Hey, I think we have a fun story to tell even if we didn't get anything on film. And it was a neat place to check out even if nothing had happened."
Kelsey slipped out her phone, poking around to bring up the pictures. "I mean, there was that laughter right? And I got tapped on the shoulder. Which was kinda scary admittedly." She leaned forward so they could both look at the picture. "It was cool to check out though." She agreed. "Even if we didn't get anything." She starts carefully swiping through the pictures that were taken. So far they just seemed to be of the theater. Nothing odd or out of place.
Jaime watches while she pulls out the phone and pokes around to pull up the images. "Yeah, I mean there was definitely laughter. And I definitely felt my shoulder get touched at least once. And it wasn't you because your hands were way over on the seat away from me. So, I'd say something happened, whatever it was." He watches as she flips through the images, leaning in to examine them on the phone.
"Oh? Nice. I wasn't expecting anything to happen so have multiple things happen is neat." She adjusts the phone slightly so they have an easier time looking. In the end, there was indeed nothing on the pictures except the theater. "Ah well, maybe next time." She chuckled, glancing over towards Jaime. "Though, these two were called 'friendly' ghosts in the stuff I read. I dunno if I wanna encounter a not friendly one."
About this time the waitress came back with their shakes, setting them down. "One mocha coffee shake and a strawberry." Kelsey eased back a little, sliding her phone out of the way. "You guys decide what you wanna eat?"
"Yeah, let's avoid the not friendly ones. These were alright," Jaime grins as he looks over the pictures. If he was disappointed in not finding much to see other than the theatre itself, he doesn't show it. Instead, he seems pretty content overall with the outcome of their little adventure. "Thanks," he says when their shakes arrive and then orders his patty melt and fries, and lets Kelsey order her own meal before the waitress leaves them to their own devices again.
Kelsey orders her burger and fries as she slips her phone away, thanking the waitress. She picked up her spoon to take a spoonful of her strawberry shake. "Mmmm" Swallow. "So good." Pulling the glass closer to herself and grinning back to Jaime. "So if you didn't have company on this run would you have just headed to the hotel and been chilling out? Well, probably food in there somewhere too."
Jaime slides his own shake over in her direction so that she can take a spoon from it if she wants. Then he takes it back afterward and takes a sip of it, sighing contentedly. That is the stuff. "Yeah, I'd have grabbed some food somewhere, maybe caught a movie, then hit the hotel, probably texted someone for a while, or watched TV, then passed out. Depends on the town. Some places, I have stuff that I like to do, places I like to visit. But here, mostly I just crash."
Kelsey will snag a spoonful of his too and offered her shake in turn if he wanted a little. "Not bad. Though I think I'll stick with Strawberry. Probably cause I'm not a huge coffee person." She chuckled. "Seems like a decent night. This town seems easily like the sort that you crash in if you didn't know people or have something specific in mind." A moment of thought before adding, "What sort of things do you like to do or go see when you're driving?"
Jaime reaches out with a spoon and grabs a small spoonfull of Kelsey's shake to try it. He already knows he likes strawberry, though, so there's no surprise there when it turns out to be good. "Mn, alright, this place gets an A in my book, if solely for the nostalgia factor and the shakes." He nods at her assessment of the town, "Pretty much." Then he considers, "Depends on where I am, what night of the week it is, whether I know anyone in town. Most places, I don't, so it's just me. Sometimes I go out to a bar, or catch a movie. Sometimes I will go see whatever weird sites there are in town, like the world's largest paperclip, or the world's smallest elephant, or whatever.. Sometimes it'll just be a cool themed restaurant, or I'll catch a drive in movie since those are hard to find these days. Sometimes I browse the tourist brochures and check out museums, or art galleries."
Kelsey listens with interest at Jaime explains the different things he likes to do. "Sounds like fun." She said finally. "Trying different things, seeing stuff. Hah, a roadtrip seeing those random attractions would be cool." Running a hand through her hair. "I don't think I've ever been to a drive in. Do they show old movies generally?" Brow quirked, curious as she took another bite of her shake. "What's the neatest museums you've been to?"
"Sometimes old movies," Jaime says, "Sometimes newer ones. Depends on the Drive In and whether it's an old one that's struggling to stay open or if it's one that's got a more profitable business associated with it and it's more for fun and nostalgia." He takes another sip of his shake and then grins, "Hmm, neatest museums. I've liked some of the ones from the gold rush days. They've been kind of interesting. Saw a museum full of memento mori from the 1800s that was pretty creepy. Some various factory museums that show how technology's evolved over the centuries. Those are pretty cool."
"That's pretty neat. Well if you find yourself going on a run where there's a drive in - hit me up. I don't think I've ever been to one. Only seen 'em in the movies." Kelsey tilted her head slightly, curious as he talked about the museums. "That memento mori things sounds awesome. Then again, I am a fan of creepy so..." She laughed. "Niche museums can be cool. There's a lot of them in Nebraska. I didn't see a lot of 'em before moving away but my favorites were Bank of Florence - which is a pioneer time bank and then there's one all about American Racing and Racecars that's really cool."
"Really?" Jaime asks and then considers. "We should see if there's one on the way to Salt Lake, or on the way back." He laughs and says "Yeah, I figured you'd like that one. That was in San Diego and part of a Ghost Tour down there. If I ever go down the coast that way, I'll let you know." He smiles in thanks as the waitress returns with their food and sets it down in front of them. Grabbing a fry, he says, "Both of those sound kind of cool. I'd check them out."
"This is gonna sound weird probably, but sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong generation. I'd love to have been able to really experience some things during the height of their time. Like. Speakeasies, drive-ins, things like that." She admitted as she snagged one of her own fries to eat. "I'll check when we're at the hotel. If there's any drive ins in our paths. And definitely hit me up if you head down there." Nodding. "I'll make a list if you ever find yourself going that far out. There's a ton of museums for all kinds of things."
"Sure, but then there are things you'd probably miss, like the internet, cell phones, Google," Jaime grins over at her. "I like experiencing those things now, with all the modern conveniences." He picks his way through his fries, and says, "You should make a list of places you want to see. I'm making one up, too, and then whenever I end up on a route that's going by them, I can let you know. Did that with Everly not too long ago. Went and hit a couple of random sights."
"Well, that's true. I do love my internet. Especially Google." Kelsey grinned back. "Still, would be fun to like compare them somehow." She took a bite of her burger as he suggested the making of the list. A thoughtful noise as she swallowed. "That's an idea. I'll have to brainstorm a little. I don't think about traveling a whole lot - could be a fun little side project." Another sip of shake. "The food here is great too. Gonna have to snap some pictures before we leave."
"I could see you as a time traveler, hopping across the decades and centuries, sampling things as they were before everything changed," Jaime says as he lifts his patty melt and bites into it, sighing contentedly at the warm juicy burger, cheese, onions, and crispy toasted bread. He is quiet for a bit while he chews, trying not to talk around the food in his mouth. "Doesn't hurt to have a list, then if I happen to be going through a place that's got something you want to see, I can let you know. I get paid to do the driving, and you get a free ride."
There was a very fleeting, hard-to-discern look that passed over Kelsey's features when he mentioned time traveling, but then she laughed. "Yeah, time travel would be cool as fuck." Another grin given to him. "True. I'll work on one. Even if it's only got a few things on it to start. That's the great thing about lists right? You can add stuff as easily as you can take it away. I appreciate the offer Jaime. I'll likely take you up on it. It's good to get out of the Harbor now and then."
Jaime raises a brow at that fleeting look, not quite sure how to read it, but at the same time, not sure if he should ask about it either. Instead, he takes another bite of his burger and listens. Then he nods and says, "I love the Harbor. It's home. It's where my family is and where I keep my stuff. It's where I'll always go back to. But I like to get out and explore the world a bit. That's another area Joey and I differ. He has no real desire to go out on an adventure, but then, he's got enough going on in town, I suppose."
Kelsey notices the brow raise but she's perfectly happy to not address it. "I love to explore. I don't really feel at home anywhere yet. My technical home I guess is North Carolina. Nebraska might've been the closest to feeling like I was at home but, " She shrugs. "I don't really feel like anywhere is home anymore. Gray Harbor has potential because I'm finally making an effort to try and meet people, get to the know them. We'll see if it sticks." She took another few bites of burger. When she finished, "How's he doing anyway? I haven't seen too much of 'im lately."
"Why Nebraska?" Jaime asks, seeming fine with leaving the topic she doesn't seem inclined to talk about in the past, and moving on to something else instead. "What about Nebraska made it feel like home?" This seems to intrigue him, and he settles back in his seat, poking through his fries and sipping his shake, alternating the salty and the sweet. "Joey? He's fine. He and Nicole are doing well. The gym's doing well. His various projects seem to be going alright. He got a new dog."
Kelsey took a long sip of her shake, perhaps to stall, perhaps to gather her thoughts or think about an answer. "Well," She said finally. "I had a job I loved. I had friends I adored. I had a relationship that seemed like it would actually go somewhere but," There's a shrug of her shoulders. "Some fucked up shit happened to me there and I tried to stay around but - well - obviously that didn't happen." She gave a wry smile. "Good to hear, I'll have to try and catch him at the gym sometime and say hi." Pushing back a few stray strands of hair. "So you really don't think you'll ever leave Gray Harbor?" Lifting a fry and leaning over slightly to snag a dip in his shake before popping it in her mouth.
Jaime nods his head as she explains about Nebraska, and pops another fry into his mouth, chewing it thoughtfully. "Probably not, not for a long time, anyway. I've got a lot of ties there, and people who need me, you know? I can't just take off. But then, I do a lot of traveling already for work, so that satisfies that need to see other places." He grins a little and asks, "Why? You planning to escape?"
"If I was, would you come with me?" Waggling her eyebrows at him before laughing. Teasing,. A thing, as he has likely learned by now, she rather enjoyed even if she didn't get the opportunity often. "Nah, I'm not going anywhere. Like I said in the truck, it's a strange little town - even if a lot of bad stuff tends to happen there - I like it well enough. Besides, I just renewed my rental for the year. I do think I'd like to travel overseas a time or two though at least. Not sure where though."
"I don't know, would you want me to come with you?" Jaime asks as he leans back in the booth, one arm draped along the back of the chair he's sitting in, his own muddy green eyes sparkling just a little bit at the teasing. "Overseas is one place that I can't take you in the truck," he does concede. "It's really not really good at floating."
Kelsey paused a moment and then laughed again. "Well, shit. I walked right into that one didn't I?" She waggled a fry at him. "You seem like someone who might be fun to run away with. So. Maybe." Is her answer. "Yeah, would be rather inefficient without the flotation devices and all that." Finally eating her fry as she leaned back as well. "I dunno if I can eat another bite. I might have to get a box and save it for a late night snack or breakfast."
Jaime chuckles and says, "You kind of did, yeah." Though he takes her answer with a nod, still grinning a bit as he finishes off the rest of his fries. He looks at the other half of his patty melt and then nods, "Yeah, we can toss it in the fridge in the room. There's usually a microwave to heat things up a bit." Then he motions for the waitress and takes care of their tab, requesting a pair of boxes. It doesn't take long for the boxes to arrive, and for the tab to be settled up. Then, it's just a short walk back to the truck.
Once out in the fresh, albeit crisp, air Kelsey gives a contented sigh. "I'd say the first leg of our journey has been pretty successful." Taking in their surroundings as they make the short walk to the truck. "Do you ever sleep in that little bunk in the cab?" An idle curiosity as they arrive at the truck and she starts to climb back in. She turns to eye the bunk over properly, well as properly as can be with their stuff stored on it. Then settles into the seat so she can buckle up.
"Sometimes," Jaime says as they reach the cab and he pulls himself up into it, settling back into the driver's seat and passing his box of leftovers over to Kelsey to manage as he turns them back onto the road to head over to the hotel. "Not often though. It's not comfortable. But if I've got a run that's not long enough to stay overnight and I just want to catch enough of a nap to be awake to drive? Yeah, I'll just pull over to a rest stop and take a nap back there."
"Makes sense." Kelsey took his leftover box, neatly stacking the containers together and holding on to them. "Doesn't look really comfortable either." There's a chuckle with that. She relaxed into the seat, keeping her focus primarily out the window and windshield, watching some of the town pass by as Jaime navigated them to the hotel. Content with silence, listening to the radio, or small talk for the most part. "Can I ask a personal question?" Is posed when they are nearly to the hotel, tilting her head to finally look back at him.
"I could probably get something to make it more comfortable, but honestly, it does what it needs to do," Jaime says with a shrug of his shoulders. Though when she asks if she can ask a personal question, he lifts a brow and looks over at her, a little grin tugging his lips. "Sure. Shoot."
Sure. Kelsey opens her mouth as if to pose said question and then closes it again. Like maybe she's finding it really awkward to ask what she's about to ask, even if she shouldn't. It wasn't even a weird question! Let's try again. She cleared her throat a bit, "So how come no one's wrangled you yet? Or have they tried and just failed?" Turning a little in her seat, mostly just seeming curious. Even if her pale skin was tinged ever so slightly pink. "Or am I just being presumptuous and you do?"
There's definite curiosity in Jaime's expression when she starts to ask and then doesn't, as though he's wondering what sort of whopper of a question it's going to be. So when she does finally ask, he grins a little bit and shrugs his shoulders, not seeming to mind. "Guess I'm just a little too wild for wranglin'" he says in his best cowboy impression, grinning at her sidelong.
The blonde can't help but laugh at his impression. "Just a little, hm?" Returning the grin. "I guess that's a fair answer." Accepting it just fine. "Though I can't help but wonder if there's a smattering of women in Gray Harbor mourning over not being able to tame Jaime Kelly." She winked, shifting in her seat again so she was facing front once more, leaning forward a little so she would have a better glimpse of the place they were staying for the night when they got there.
"I don't know," Jaime says with a shrug of his shoulders, "Some don't seem to mind riding what they can't tame, so long as they get to ride. Besides, there was a whole Jello Battle to determine the sexiest of the Kelly twins and that title went to Joey. He's the one beatin' them off with a stick." He flashes her a grin, then, clearly not being terribly serious.
Kelsey giggled again. "True. It can be fun to play around on the wild side, no matter what consequence it might bring." She shook her head at the mention of the Jello Battle, grinning again. "Yeah I caught some of that. Was pretty entertaining. Though I did have to duck out early. " She mused, glancing to him. "But, I dunno, you both got your own vibes going. I think I like yours a little better."
Jaime grins when it makes her laugh, since that was what he was going for. He pulls in to the hotel and finds a spot to leave the cab, before he opens the door and his boots hit the ground. When he comes around the truck he says, "Yeah? Why's that?" curious, perhaps, as to what exactly it is about his vibe that she likes better. Wandering in to the office he says, "Reservation for Kelly," and hands over his license and credit card.
Kelsey climbs down from the truck with her bag and their leftovers. "You don't seem as, uh, hard headed as your brother?" She chuckled. "I can't really pinpoint one thing honestly. But just comparing the few times I've hung out with your brother to the few times we've hung out -including this time. I dunno, maybe just vibes better with my vibe." As she followed him into the lobby, taking a peek around. "We have more things in common I think."
The lobby is pretty non-descript in that sort of they-all-look-the-same sort of way. There's plain furniture, a blue and grey sort of decor with a breakfast bar that is closed until the morning hours. There's a small business office where one can print things. There's a pool further down the hall, and an exercise room, and there's a bank of elevators that lead up the whopping three floors to the rooms above. It's not a big place, but it's clean. Once Jaime has the key card, he turns and heads in the direction of the elevators, "Yeah, Joey's.. a little more intense. I'm.. more laid back, I think." That's how he sees their differences, anyway.
"That's a good way to put it." Kelsey agreed, following him to the elevators. Once on the way up, she leans against the little railing in the elevator. "Joey's a cool guy, but I think you're a little easier to talk to. For me at least." A beat of pause, "I call first dibs on the shower by the way." Flashing a smile. Straightening a bit again when the elevator would reach their floor and follow him out.
Jaime narrows his eyes when she calls dibs on the shower and says, "So long as you leave some hot water for me, I suppose I can allow it." Not that she could use up all the hot water in the hotel if she wanted to, but he makes the tease anyway. It's a short jaunt down the hall to the room, and when they walk in, it's a pretty standard hotel room. Two queen sized beds side by side, a night table between them, a desk with a mirror over it, a dresser with a TV on top, a small mini fridge in a little cabinet with a small microwave on top and a coffee maker, and a bathroom with a closet opposite it.
Jaime wanders in and drops his duffle on the desk and then sits on the end of the bed nearest the window to pull off his boots before flopping backward on it and letting his arms spread out to either side. "Not moving til the shower's free," he announces.
"I might be so inclined." Kelsey teased back. Once in the room, she stows the containers in the fridge before tossing her stuff down on the other bed. "Pretty nice room." She shrugged off her flannel and her boots. "Then you're just gonna be laying there all night." Grinning at him before she dug around in her bag for a tank top and a pair of pajama bottoms. "I won't be too long." She assured him as she also pulled out a full sized bottle of shampoo since Kelsey knew the little bottle offered wouldn't cover nearly enough of her long hair. Then disappears into the bathroom.
All in all, she's only in there for about twenty minutes. When she emerges, her hair is piled high and wrapped up in a towel and she's changed in to a black tank top with a pair of flannel bottoms. "Alright, all yours cowboy." Stuffing her other clothes into her bag and flopping down on her bed this time. "I left you a tiny bit of a hot water."
"Jesus woman, how long does it take you to wash your hair?" Jaime asks when she tells him he'll be there all night, but it's totally a tease. His eyes are closed and he seems pretty close to just dozing off right there, not caring at all if he has to wait. When she does resurface, he groans and drags himself up off the bed and ambles on in. His own shower takes less than ten minutes. When he comes out, his hair is damp, and lightly toweled, falling a bit in his eyes. He wears a pair of flannel pajama pants but no shirt as he tosses his laundry into a plastic bag and tosses it next to his duffle. "So, did you find us anything haunted in Salt Lake?" he asks.
When he comes out of the shower, Kelsey is curled up on her bed, halfway through voice-to-texting a text to Garrett to let him know they got in okay and to say hi to 'the boys' aka the dogs. She finishes it off and hits send, giving Jaime an idle little once over. Her hair was also out of the towel and pulled back into a ponytail again for now. "Unfortunately not too many options that would necessarily be open to the public." She gives a dramatic sigh. "A fair amount of mansions though, also a theater, train station and a trolley station. I'm betting we could probably swing the train or trolley station. Maybe. Even if it's not technically open - still might have plenty of places where the public could technically take a look."
Jaime leans against the desk, arms folded in front of him and considers the options, "Yeah, could do the train or trolley station, maybe even the theatre, since we could start a collection of haunted theatres." He grins easily and then says, "At least tomorrow's a short ride, so we'll have more time. Can poke around and see more than one, most likely."
"I like that idea. Find a haunted theater in every city." Kelsey mused, setting her phone down and relaxing against the pillows and headboard. "let's try one of the stations first and then the theater. Maybe we'll even catch a movie this time around too. Oh that reminds me, I have to see if there's any drive-ins too. This roadtrip is way better than the solo one I tried to take." She laughed.
"I like that idea. We can put together a collection -- Haunted Theatres of the United States, or something like that," Jaime says as he wanders over and sits down on the end of her bed. "Oh, and a drive-in, yeah. Definitely check for one of those. I haven't been to one in a while." He stretches just a bit and then says, "Train station or trolley station? I'm voting trolley, just because while trains are cool, trolleys are kind of cooler."
Kelsey grabs her phone again, moving so she can lay down on the bed - head down by him and feet towards the head board. "Hah, yeah. It'd be a pretty cool book, or article or something." She agrees, using the voice-to-text to do a google search of drive in theaters. "Hmm...looks like there's one in salt lake actually. Well, near it. And one that we could maybe hit here in Idaho on the drive back." She tilts the phone to show him. "Trolley. I agree. Never been on a trolley before either, but I've been on a few trains and seen plenty of 'em."
"Then we should ride the trolley while we're there, too, if there are any in operation -- kill two birds with one stone. I'm all for trying things I haven't done before," Jaime grins. Then he nods as he looks at the two drive ins and says, "Well, let's see if we can hit up the one in Salt Lake, and then if we can't, or even if we do, we can always check out the one here on the way back as well." He leans at an angle so that he can see the screen, propping himself up with one arm.
"Ohh yeah. That would be fun. We'll have to see. There might be." Kelsey agreed. "I love trying new things. Hence why I'm here with you." Giving a quick wink. "I'll let fate decide which drive-in we end up at. I'm sure either one would be fun." There's a moment of pause as she looks towards the window and then back to Jaime with a grin. "I just had the notion that sitting on the cab of a truck, while tricky, would be pretty fun...though I imagine it's far safer to view from inside the cab. And still has just as good a view way up above everyone else." Letting him look before laying the phone down between them for now.
Jaime's eyes follow hers over to the window and then back again, quizzical, though he chuckles a little when she suggests sitting up on the cab of the truck. "I mean, you could if you wanted to. We could climb out onto the hood and throw a blanket on it and watch from there, though it might be a little bit chillier than being inside this time of year. Unless you didn't mind staying real close to share warmth." His smile ticks upward a little at the corners of his lips.
"I think that sounds like a great way to experience a drive-in movie." Kelsey grinned, her head tilted to briefly nudge the arm that he was using to prop himself up."I think I can handle a little bit of snuggling as the trade off if you can." Shifting a touch and crossing her arms, head resting on them. Blue eyes studying him for a beat. "A blanket to lay on, a blanket for cover, and cuddling seems like a decent recipe for staying warm, yeah?"
Jaime grins at the nudge from her head and says, "Oh, I can definitely handle it." His own eyes are a muddy sort of green, tinged with golden brown here and there, and they sparkle a little bit to match the smile on his lips. "Definitely sounds like a sound plan to me. Alright, watching from on top of the cab, it is." He chuckles. "Can add that to the list of things I've never done before."
"Trolley rides, cab sitting, whole lotta firsts happening on this trip, hm?" Kelsey mused. "But that's a good thing. New experiences means new stories to tell. What time do we have to head out tomorrow?" She pushed herself up a little bit reluctantly so she could plug in her phone but then settled right back down, turned on her side now and maybe just a hair closer to him than she'd been before. "I kind of have a craving for a bagel. Might see if there's a bakery near here in the morning if I get up early enough."
"Whole lot of firsts," Jaime chuckles. "Way more fun than if I were doing it on my own. I'm glad you decided to come." He then considers and says, "Well, it's about a five hour drive, so I figure we should roll out of here around eleven at the latest. Earlier if ew decide to get up and get breakfast earlier. Then we'll have more time to do stuff tomorrow afternoon. That, or later, and we can always just spend more time the following day doing stuff before we head back to Boise and just get in to Boise later." He shifts a bit so that he's a little bit more on his side, resting down onto his elbow instead of propping himself up with his hand. "Best bagel place I've ever been was in Texas. THey had giant big soft bagels the size of your face."
"I'm glad I did too." Kelsey agreed, "Oh that's not too bad at all. I'll be up wayyy before eleven. We'll have to take a walk and see what we find." Or google it. That was probably easier. "I'm game for however we wanna do it. We'll play it by ear. That seems the most likely way." She rose a brow at the bagel talk. "Jeeze, that is a big bagel. Though, isn't there some kind of saying about everything's bigger in Texas?" She giggled. "Sounds good though. Maybe I'll have to add that to my list. 'Eat a bagel the size of my face'"
"I'm pretty sure we'll figure it out as we go along," Jaime says confidently as he watches her, chuckling a little bit at her reaction to the bagel story. "It's true, even the bagels. And everyone should eat a bagel the size of their face at least once. I liked the strawberry ones the best, they were swirled with chunks of real strawberry. And nobody, not nobody, can give me shit about my giant pink bagel." He grins.
"Ahhh that sounds amazing." Kelsey laughed when he described the bagel. "We might just have to detour all the way down to Texas now." A contented sigh escaped her lips. "Maybe I'll try my hand at making bagels when we're back in Gray Harbor. I haven't tried anything like it before. Could be fun."
"We do actually have to go back to Gray Harbor at some point," Jaime reminds her with a little bit of a laugh as he shifts just slightly, and reaches out to push a couple of stray strands of hair back from her cheek. "But if you do learn how to make giant bagels the size of my face, that would be amazing, not going to lie."
"I meannnn eventually. Probably." Kelsey grinned. Her head tilted a little, mostly instinctive, leaning into the brush of his fingers when he pushed back her hair. "If I perfect the giant bagel making process, you'll be the first to get one. Promise." She chuckled. There was a fleeting glance around the part of the room she was facing, considering something. Then focused back on him. "...We probably should sleep at some point too." A touch of smile, it was getting late and they really couldn't sleep in too long tomorrow. "Maybe we could, uh, practice our cuddling technique." Offered up just a little awkwardly and then she couldn't help but chuckle at how ridiculous she felt that sounded, covering her face with her uninjured hand because it was surely getting red. Though, she didn't seem to be implying anything more than actually just cuddling.
"They're going to want their truck back, too," Jaime points out with a grin. "I don't actually own it, just drive it. So, it will be expected back at the end of the job." Though, when she mentions that they should sleep, he pushes himself back up and says, "Yeah, we should." Though the suggestion that follows causes his lips to twitch in amusement, as well as the flush that touches her cheeks afterward. He gets up and moves over to his own bed, pulling back the covers and then he slides in beneath them and holds out a hand toward her. "You coming?" he asks.
"I'm sure I could spin a wonderful excuse as to why you need it for longer." Kelsey mused. After her follow up remarks, the hand lowers from her face - watching him go to his bed. Her skin still flushed and maybe she's mentally kicking herself but...then he's offering her to join him. There's a soft exhale as she pushes herself up into a sitting position. "I suppose I am." Flashing a smile as she stood up and made the short transition over to his bed, sliding underneath the covers. She does flick off the lamp on the nightstand before sliding closer to him. After all, no sense in getting comfy if there's still a light that'll need to be turned off. She draped an arm over his torso once she was close. "Thank you for indulging me." Is murmured to him.
"I bet you could," Jaime says, "And I might even let you give it a shot." He laughs a little as he imagines putting her on the phone with the trucking company to explain why they needed to drive the company truck all the way to Texas and back. He waits while she shuts off the light and then climbs into bed. There's little light to see by, a small sliver coming under the door from the hall, and a tiny sliver of the lights outside through the blackout curtains, just enough to make out faint outlines. He shifts his arm as she lays down next to him, so that it slips under her head, and around her. He chuckles just a little and says, "It's tough, but, you know, for you? I think I can manage it," in that lightly teasing tone, his arm giving her a small squeeze.
There's a momentary uptick in her heart rate when he wraps her up, not used to this kind of situation. Even so, she reminds herself to relax, which is helped along by the chuckle elicited by his tease. "How kind of you to take on such a challenging task." Her head nuzzled a bit against his arm as she gets comfortable. Eyes closing as she breathes in his scent. "Sleep well Jaime, and dream of giant bagels." Kelsey giggles again, though it doesn't take long for her breathing to even out and body to relax even further signaling that sleep has come.
Jaime lets his eyes drift closed and he mumbles a sleepy, "That's me. Hard workin'. Always up for a challenge." But that last bit gets kind of fuzzy. He does chuckle again though and says, "Mhmn," about the giant bagels. His own breathing is slow and steady, and he isn't long after her to fall asleep.
