Battle for Babylon is not the most popular game out there, but it's found a niche among history buffs and those who like to hack and slash through a well-rendered ancient world. The standalone game is more popular with its open world and immersive storyline, but the MMO side has its fans as well. That side of the game is more focused on military strategy as players compete in capture the flag style tournaments to take and hold towns and cities.

The Neo-Assyrian Empire is a group within the game that Alexander has managed to get himself invited to. The group delights in picking through the history of the game and comparing it to known mythology, and using outside sources to try and dig up Easter eggs. Some of them are nice and friendly folks (if a little intense) though there are others who are rude and interrogative and delight in gatekeeping new members with obscure facts.

There are two players in particular that seem to be hardcore. One is a player with an absolutely jacked tank named Asardin, and the other is a quieter and more conspiracy-leaning Naram-Sin whose avatar is a priest and healer type. They seem to be the defacto leaders, such as the group even has leaders.

Alexander - or AttacKur, as he decided after extensive googling of 'MMO character names' and finding a pun that made him smile, as he has become known - has been putting some solid hours into the game. The joys of being unconventionally employed. He's actually pretty damned good at the military strategy side. So much that it makes him inclined to miss some of the mythological references when he's really getting into things - although Isabella has occasionally bailed him out, and he's determined to fake it until he makes it. So he helps take over some objectives, and scopes out the crew. He leans towards Naram-Sin when he gets the chance, falling into a natural role of 'protect the squishy' and also offering advice on the strategy side, while being gracious about the corrections when he gets some of the mythology wrong, or misses an Easter egg.

One day, he reaches out to both of them:

<Private> to Asardin, Naram-Sim: AttacKur says, "Hey. Had sort of a research project going on on the side, and was wondering if I could pick your brains when you had time. I'm not as good at finding the hidden things, but I was really hoping to prove to some friends that these guys nailed their research."

Yeah, everything is punctuated and spelled out. He's willing to take on a nickname for MURDER, but MMOspeak? Never.

And Alexander's skill has definitely made him friends within the group whose members are from all over Washington State.

to Naram-Sin, AttacKur: Asardin says, "fuck em if they dont apreciate the game. u dont need 2 do there homework for them."

The poor spelling and typos is pretty par for the course for Asardin.

to AttacKur, Asardin: Naram-Sin says, "Dude this game needs players. There's rumors that they might turn off the MMO servers cuz numbers are dropping. What do you want to know?"

Naram-Sin on the other hand, trips up sometimes but does tend to type in complete sentences.

to Naram-Sin, Asardin: AttacKur says, "I'd like them to get into the game! It's a lot of fun, and they're geeky, so if I make them see it's not just another of the lame gatcha things, they'll be into it. One's into dark stuff; she's the one who told me about Kur. Inspired the name. 😃 I was just curious about what kind of cool Easter eggs you've seen that specifically speak to that kind of stuff? Something I could really dig into and show them!"

to Naram-Sin, Asardin: AttacKur says, "Maybe it's weird. But I feel like, sometimes, there's a deeper story the devs are telling. I guess because they do so much good research."

to Naram-Sin, AttacKur: Asardin says, "oh so you wanna bang this chik i see."

to AttacKur, Asardin: Naram-Sin says, "You hear about the sacrifices? Kill certain NPC and leave them in certain places and you get some sweet bonuses. But you gotta be careful cuz you don't want a swarm. Gotta know a lot abt gods to get the right sacrifice tho."

NPCs are all killable in the game, but if you do it in view of anyone, you will lose reputation points which reduces how cooperative NPCs are and your share of raids on other towns and cities. Do it too much and you lose access to entire towns unless you pay reparations that can be quite hefty with in-game currency. The NPCs also have tendency to swarm and kill you dead if you were to shank the butcher in the middle of the market, for instance.

to Naram-Sin, Asardin: AttacKur says, "I do like her a lot. But that's not the point. Naram-Sin, that sounds so cool. Is this one of the undocumented side-quests? Maybe I can figure out some of the associations. Abzu would clearly be water, right? So, maybe the Phoenician Sailor? Kill him and leave him on an island tile? Could probably lure him out of sight. Don't want a swarm. 🙁"

to AttacKur, Asardin: Naram-Sin says, "yeah maybe. I got 1 with Erra in the tower," The eponymous Tower of Babel which dominates the skyline of Babylon. "hard as shit. burned all my stealth consumables took me two weeks to build em up. but i got lion of babylon form and can fly limited and fire attack. think reward is based on your class."

to Naram-Sin, AttacKur: Asardin says, "oh yeah. Zamama found that hax. She got some sweet warrior abilities."

to AttacKur, Asardin: Naram-Sin says, "Zamama's a dude. Ass. Just has tits avatar cuz it's the only way to get priestess class."

to Naram-Sin, AttacKur: Asardin says, "fuck"

to Naram-Sin, Asardin: AttacKur says, "I would like some DPS boosts. Maybe I'll try it. Have to do solo, or can you group?"

to Naram-Sin, Asardin: AttacKur says, "I think you broke Asardin's heart, Naram-Sin."

to AttacKur, Asardin: Naram-Sin says, "He should know better than to assume based on avi. You new here Ass?"

to Naram-Sin, AttacKur: Asardin says, "fuck off"

to AttacKur, Asardin: Naram-Sin says, "can do group but only one of you can get the boost. So people sometimes team up and gank the reward."

to Naram-Sin, Asardin: AttacKur says, "It's okay, Asardin. There's always more fish in the Abzu. 🙂 And that's lame. We're supposed to be on the same side. If I find one of them, want to group up? We could do it three times, one for each. Grab boost without ganking."

Please ignore Alexander's growing desire to reach through the screen and insist, "His name isn't ASS!"

to AttacKur, Asardin: Naram-Sin says, "yeah maybe if you can find a spot. Zamama is not telling people where spots are, just that theyre a thing. Some people think he's a dev planting crumbs."

to Naram-Sin, AttacKur: Asardin says, "so I've been flirting with a dude DEV?"

to Naram-Sin, Asardin: AttacKur says, "We don't judge, Asardin. All people and their flirtations are equally valid as we slide towards apocalypse, ruin, and the inescapable fall of night. 🙂 Maybe I should talk to Zamama. See if he'll spill a crumb or two in my direction and track it down. Does flirting work?"

to Naram-Sin, AttacKur: Asardin says, "no comment"

to AttacKur, Asardin: Naram-Sin says, "hahaha yeah it does that's how we learned it exists the first time."

to Naram-Sin, Asardin: AttacKur says, "Awesome. I suck at flirting. Will have to dazzle with my scintillating personality, instead. So...when I get banned from game, you'll know why."

<FS3> Alexander rolls Presence + Attempt To Be Smooth-2: Success (6 ) (Rolled by: Alexander)

to AttacKur, Asardin: Naram-Sin says, "hahaha good luck dude. when you find a spot I will run with you. We can't try tower again tho. Too many people know about it so the server gets laggy as fuck and kicks you"

Asardin has disconnected from server.

to Zamama: AttacKur says, "Hey! I was hearing that you know of a couple of undocumented challenge runs related to the mythology. I was thinking of trying to hunt them down; any clues for a newbie?"

He tried to type 'n00b'. He did, he really did. But his fingers froze and in the end, only the closest thing to a real word could come out.

to Naram-Sin: AttacKur says, "Oh man, I hope we didn't upset him. 🙁 He's cool. And that's good to know. So each one's sort of self-policing. If it gets out on a site it no longer works. Awesome! I love a good mystery. This game has been sort of a life-saver, really. Something to dig into, you know?"

to AttacKur, Zamama says, "You seek to appease the gods and earn their favor?"

to AttacKur, Naram-Sin says, "nah his kids probs just got home. He doesn't want them to know he plays"

to Zamama, AttacKur says, "I wish to make sacrifices in their name and be blessed by them, if I am found worthy."

to Naram-Sin, AttacKur says, "Oh, good. Probably for the best. It can take up a lot of time. 😃 Thanks for the help, as always. Let me know when you want to sack that temple. I think I've got an idea for getting past the defenses, if you can drum up some DPS some time. Maybe weekend?"

to AttacKur, Zamama says, "The gods demand blood. Are you willing to shed it?"

There isn't the sense that Zamama is a NPC. It's definitely coming from a player bit. Zamama's avatar is a warrior-priestess with four arms and a winged helmet. The gear is quite rare and the character's level is very high - maxed out. It also lists the player as having 100 per cented the main game on master mode.

to AttacKur, Naram-Sin says, "yeah man hmu. I'll work on Ass too. He needs the boost cause he keeps getting fucken shanked in the Maze," one of the instances that people run regularly to keep them in good gear and consumables for the city raids.

Alexander looks over the player profile page. He mutters to himself, "Well. Either a dev, or has even less of a life than me. Cool skin, though." ...yeah, maybe he's playing a bit too much. He refocuses on the important part: that this COULD possibly be a deluded serial killer.

to Zamama, AttacKur says, "As the gods demand blood, so will I shed it without hesitation."

to Naram-Sin, AttacKur says, "Maze is a PITA for tank, for sure. I'll keep an eye for boosts, let you guys know."

to AttacKur, Zamama says, "Which of the god's favor do you curry?"

to AttacKur, Naram-Sin says, "sounds good. Gotta jet for now. Good luck!"

Naram-Sin has disconnected.

<FS3> Alexander rolls Babylonian Mythology And Mmos: Success (8 7 5 3 1) (Rolled by: Alexander)

Alexander considers that for a moment. They've found the bodies for two, and there's always that feel that one of the Harbor's missing people is next to be found. But how closely to the game does the killer try to hue? He stares at the screen, then types.

to Zamama, AttacKur says, "I seek to make a sacrifice to Dumuzid, who blesses us with fertile land and strength."

to AttacKur, Zamama says, "Send one back to the land who tends the land along with one of its flock."

There are in fact, multiple farmer's fields between towns and city-states with sheep and goats running free, along with small farmsteads.

Well. That's one of those FUN coincidences. Alexander feels a thrill down his spine. He'll have to test it, of course. Which means a whole lotta shepherd bothering in his future. Virtual shepherd bothering and virtual sheep killing. He licks his lips.

To Zamama, AttacKur says, "Need the gods be appeased one by one, or may I seek the favor of all as I may?"

to AttacKur, Zamama says, "Prove your worthiness by appeasing one, and another may see fit to grant you favors."

to Zamama, AttacKur says, "I understand. I will prove myself worthy in the eyes of the gods, and give them all that they ask for!"

Time to hunt shepherds, it looks like.

The challenge is far harder than it first appears. It's easy to see why Naram-Sin said he burned a lot of his stealth consumables. It's exceedingly hard to kill a farmer NPC without someone noticing. The fields are wide and open and apparently villagers have really good eyesight. Add to that, you need to kill one of the sheep within the same general area, over cuneiform patterns burned into the grass. Everything can get lined up perfectly skill-wise, but then something random in the game (like a weather event, players running through to get to another challenge, the pattern of an NPC) will completely botch the whole attempt.

<FS3> Alexander rolls Stealth Kill Skillz (8 7 6 4 2) vs Stupid Pixels! (a NPC)'s 4 (8 8 6 6 5 4)
<FS3> Marginal Victory for Stupid Pixels!. (Rolled by: Alexander)

Alexander tries. He does try. He tries and curses and tries again, and gets beaten to death by shepherds more times than he wants to count - although it's at least entertaining. Especially when the sheep join in. But eventually he concedes defeat, and sends mails to Naram-Sin and Asardin, keying them in to the Easter Egg, and getting together a trio run. If they get baaaten, at least they get beaten together.

Eventually, Alexander is successful and is granted the ability to summon a swarm of shadow-sheep that can trample enemies. The ability granted shifts based on class. For instance, the thank is granted a massive wooly pelt that summons itself in colder environments and counteracts the effect the cold usually has on the character's speed.

Once the quest is complete, Zamama grants another clue. This one leads to Abzu and the seashore. The similarities with the actual murder for this one seem quite surface. The beach kill involves drowning a fisherman on a small skiff. But one of the other players mention that they think that one's new. It's one that is able to be done solo, but it involves several annoying fetch quests to gain the trust of the fisherman so he'll take you fishing. But when successfully completed, Alexander's character gains the ability to swim underwater without drowning, which makes it easier to farm for sea-resources and discover a sunken temple.

The ability to swim underwater is a new update to the game. It's only been out a few weeks.

No wonder people think Zamama is a developer. Alexander can't actually frown when summoning shadow-sheep to trample enemies; it's impossible. But these incredibly specific (and murderous) easter eggs which grant custom abilities - or abilities that have only just been added, definitely seem to be something that would require more than persistence and good luck to find. Idly, he starts to troll forums, looking for any evidence that Zamama might actually be a dev, or that he might be a hacker who is adding these quests to the game under the radar, somehow. Especially as the ability to swim underwater and the disappearance of Henry are...a little too close in time for his liking.

He also sends a message to Zamama: "I have proven my worthiness for two of the gods. I am ready for more. Which god craves blood next?"

<FS3> Alexander rolls Research: Success (7 7 5 5 4 3 2 1 1 1) (Rolled by: Alexander)

Zamama sends a reply. "Gibil craves tribute but the time is not right."

It takes a little digging, but people are convinced that Zamama is a dev, feeding the Easter egg of boosts to dedicated players, and perhaps playtesting a new mechanic to add to the game. People think it's cool to be able to interact with a live person (or an extremely sophisticated AI) to get quests, though some people do point out that human sacrifice doesn't seem themely for Babylonian myth and kind of counter to the game itself as it turns players into serial killers.

One player on the forum with the name 'DevotedofSamizdat' leaves a cryptic note that says, "All gods seek sacrifice. It's just realistic."

The handle is not directly connected to an in-game bit. The forum history shows evidence that he might be taking it all too seriously, though some people just take it for roleplaying. There is a distinct sense that he might follow some kind of pagan belief system in the real world, because he also comments on some threads when gods act un-godly in the game, that the portrayal is disrespectful.

Alexander makes a note to FIND A HACKER to try and trace some of these damned IPs, and mourns that he spent his time focusing on physical evidence rather than cyber crimes. Even murderers are going to the web, these days. NOT FAIR.

Once he has his middle-aged-man sulk, he marks several of the forum threads for watching, and Devoted as well, setting up alerts to let him know when they post. He also adds Zamama to his friends' list, just to try and keep an eye on their comings and goings - he'll track this where he can to gain an idea of the bit's active days and hours. Otherwise, he just...plays the game.

It's a GOOD GAME, okay? And the Pacific Northwest is not gonna dominate the world map without his help.

Some of the forums start to report there are other bits like Zamama showing up - high level players people don't remember encountering before who give out in-character clues. People also point out that no matter when you message those bits, they respond within a few minutes no matter which time of day, which suggests it's not always the same dev at the keyboard unless they just don't sleep.

It's going to take some careful waiting and watching to see more on the forums. Devoted doesn't post often.

There's more than a few suspicious characters on this game and it's hard to know who is just a weird gamer and who might be in to something far more sinister.
