2021-06-14 - Regarding Ships

As he does (nearly) every night, Ashley Jones runs the WKRW overnight broadcast. And unsurprisingly (as so happens from time to time), he talks about some weird shit.

The broadcast begins as it always has.

"Welcome to the night shift."

Beneath Ash Jones' sonorous (some might call it soporific) tone begins the opening chords of the first song of the night.

Tame Impala - Is It True

"First up tonight, the bowling alley would like to announce their new special. Every week until the end of summer, people born on odd years, in odd months, on odd days get to bowl free. This offer only good on Wednesdays between 1:45 and 3:45pm so long as the moon isn't full."

There's a pause and he adds: "They also want to note that lanes two and eight are invalid for this offer."

After a few pre-recorded commercials, it rolls into the next song.

Beck - Uneventful Days

This song fades into a long block of music that ranges from recent to the pop and rock of the 50s and 60s. Indie, hip-hop, pop, country. There's a little bit for everyone. It lasts for a few hours, broken by the odd commercial at the top of the hour. However, at midnight, instead of the commercial, there is a song:

Wash ft. French Montana - Can't Trust Thots

Only once the hour is late does AJ return to the mic.

"Ships in the harbor, have you seen them? An old woman waits. Does she wait for us or does she wait for him?"

There's a few beats of silence. Probably Ash downing some of the coffee he practically mainlines.

"Fire falls from the sky, but a storm comes. Is the storm here to put out the flames or blow them ashore?"

What follows is a long series of nautically-themed songs:

Enya - The Longships

The Decemberists - The Mainer's Revenge Song

Bryan Ferry - The Cruel Ship's Captain

for KING & COUNTRY - burn the ships

Modest Mouse - Ocean Breathes Salty

After this handful of... themeatic songs, there is a commercial break. From there on out, until the morning crew takes over ("Thanks for keeping us company through the night AJ, but here with your morning traffic report is...") it's just the standard mix of music with the rare commercial break. Ash doesn't even provide a sign-off for the night, but then... he does that sometimes.
