Spruce/HOPE Community Center
An older brick building that used to house a butcher shop; the interior is utilitarian and thrift shop chic -- nothing matches, most furniture was donated or scavenged. Renovations are on-going (and slow, in the fashion of volunteers volunteering when they have time to do so) but the place hosts support and study groups as well as various clubs and hobby groups meetings, as well as a small library and play area for parenting groups and their toddlers. The kitchen and bathroom facilities may date to the 1970s but they are fully functional in all their emerald green and mustard glory. Upstairs are reserved private rooms for therapy sessions and a couple of folding beds for people desperately needing a place for a night or two; one room is locked off, reserved for victims of domestic abuse. A hand-written sign over the door declares: HOPE Community Center.
HOPE is a community centre, run by volunteers. The official paperwork lists it as a private charity registered to the Seattle-based law firm of Wilson, Goldblum & Cruz. Unofficially, it is a privately organised and sponsored attempt to weaponise altruism against certain Veil dwelling denizens and the suffering they inflict on a very vulnerable demographic.
HOPE is funded in part by private donations, in part by community events. All work is done by volunteers or, in case of professional services, by companies and businesses donating their time pro bono. The exact services offered by HOPE will depend on what is currently being volunteered.
The core project involves giving people in need an opportunity to earn a wage with a local business, helping them to get back on their feet. HOPE helps connect businesses and potential employees. HOPE offers assistance in writing applications and resumes, study help, some degree of legal advice and counseling, on the premise of helping vulnerable people help themselves.
Also, we have cookies. Pātisserie Vydal's finest.
Want to get involved, as a volunteer or as someone seeking help? Don't be shy about getting in touch.
What's a local charity without a local people playing models charity calendar?
HOPE has no paid staff. Everything is volunteer based, and sometimes (read: usually) pretty chaotic.
