Text

With all the craziness that Byron's had to deal with in the past, let's just say almost a year, it's not difficult to see how he can feel like he's falling behind in his work. Several recent events had occupied his time: One of them being Lilith's trauma at losing an eye when the Veil bird retaliated against her. Now this with the Valentine's Dream. The one in which he'd killed her.

For the past few days, he stayed as close to Lilith as he could, rarely leaving the apartment unless he had to. It's a good thing that he did most of his work remotely, but with his attempts at trying to pull her completely out from this frazzled mental prison in which she'd locked herself up in, he's had to push back and rearrange a few of his appointments.

Now with Lilith in the shower, he attempts to tackle some of the errands he'd set out to do. 1. Call Captain de la Vega to ask him about Hobbs. Byron'd learned about this Hobbs and what became of Detectives Jones and Morgan shortly before the New Year and only now he was getting to this? It was February. But that's just how busy he'd been. And anyway, Levi or Magnolia may have already contacted him or the GHPD, right?

Either way, it's on his list to follow-up on, so he makes the call.

(TXT to Ruiz Byron:) Byron: (Ruiz's phone rings. His phone says it's Byron Thorne.)

(TXT to Byron Ruiz:) Ruiz: Answered on the fourth ring, right before it goes to voicemail, "Thorne."

(TXT to Ruiz Byron:) Byron: "Captain. I meant to ask you something at the hospital. The day Alexander Clayton was there, but it slipped my mind. If you have some time at the moment..."

(TXT to Byron Ruiz:) Ruiz: I don't know what you're talking about. Explain.

(TXT to Ruiz Byron:) Byron: Have the Jones twins spoken to you yet? Magnolia and Levi.

(TXT to Byron Ruiz:) Ruiz: No. About what?

(TXT to Ruiz Byron:) Byron: Ruiz can hear a sigh coming from Byron's of the line as if he's considering saying anything at this point. "Okay. We received a message from, I don't know, beyond the grave. Beyond the Veil? From something with the likeness of Detective Nathaniel Jones. Told us what happened to him and Detective Morgan when they disappeared and were declared dead. Warned us that whatever they were hunting before might be making its way over to our side.

(TXT to Ruiz Byron:) Byron: Byron quickly continues, "He mentioned old case files. That's why I called you."

(TXT to Byron Ruiz:) Ruiz: Ruiz's voice is maddeningly, uncharacteristically flat. "And you think I give a shit about this, why?"

(TXT to Ruiz Byron:) Byron: While Byron may be a little wary of put off by Ruiz's tone, he continues on, his first sentence sounding just as flat, "You don't have to care, Captain." His tone eases up, sounding slightly distracted, himself, "I'm just giving you a warning that either something connected to one of your cold cases might be crawling back through the Veil to bite all of Gray Harbor in the ass."

(TXT to Byron Ruiz:) Ruiz: I'll take it under consideration. Thanks for the heads up.

(TXT to Byron Ruiz:) Ruiz: (click as the phone's hung up)

Just this conversation alone reminds him of just how much he hated de la-- It reminds him of the visions that They tried to feed him in that Dream. He still remembers Ruiz and Lilith making out in whatever wild adventure they were in at the time. It was so clear and so real in his mind. Real enough to make him want to hunt Lilith down and hurt her really badly.

Without even realizing it, his back straight, muscles tense and the hand holding his phone to his hear clutches on it tightly. Those visions weren't real, they were the lies made up by the Dark Men. All lies. He tries to remind himself. Because if they weren't lies...

Pushing up and out of his chair, Lilith's voice calls out for him from the shower: "Babe?"

She was with him. Those seeds planted in Byron's mind during the course of that Dream was hard for him to shake. If they were real, then there was nothing for him to be sorry about now. But the video that she'd sent him... did that cancel out all those other images? The one with Ruiz? The one with Turner? Conflicted with these thoughts, he calls out, "Are there no fresh towels in there?" He should go and check on her and try to put those thoughts out of his mind.

Fuck de la Vega.
