It's around 8pm on a cold, blustery night, when all of our heroes are curled up on, stretched out on, or passed out on a couch -- not the same couch, mind you, but a couch in their place of residence, or at least their place of current occupation. Sleep comes with a heaviness, wrapping them up in its embrace, and carrying them away, literally as well as figuratively.
When next they are aware, Grant, Giada, Stephanie, and Hera all find themselves on a couch yet again, though this couch is definitely not the one that they fell asleep on, and now they /are/ all on the same couch, in a tangle of limbs as though someone had thrown all four of them onto it like rag dolls.
The couch itself is an enormous affair, green velvet, with thick cushions and a faint layer of dust on it as though it hadn't been occupied in some time. The room is also oversized, everything feeling as though it's just a little too large for their current bodies -- which are, for all intents and purposes, the same size as they've always been. They don't /feel/ any different, at least. The windows are cracked, and there is a definite chill in the room, which appears to be some sort of sitting room in a very old, and very large house. At the moment, they appear to be alone.
Stephanie detangles herself from the pile of the people on the couch and she recognises one person in the group. Before she can say anything, she decides to take a quiet look around. The sitting room looks rather large. In fact, the entire place seems large. She doesn't feel weird or different, but...she has no idea what to expect.
Gigi was high as shit when she fell asleep, so waking up in a strange place tangled in bodies is pretty much par for the course. Usually she's got a rough estimation of the series of events that led to the unfortunate circumstances of bodies and dusty old furnitures in oversized rooms. "Bax, I swear to fucking god, if that's your hand on my ass..." Grunting, twisting, she tumbles off the cushion into a heap on the floor and immediately grabs for her goggles that fell from her brow to replace them over her beanie.
Eyeing around herself, up on her hands and knees, crawling with a blurry eyed stare at the enormousness of their current occupied space. "Okay... no this makes perfect sense.. the weed was spiked with LCD... someone slipped me a fucking Jeffrey..." This is all to herself, looking up at Stephanie as she crawls over towards her, "Are you real?" Poking at the other woman's leg.
Huh? Wasn't the couch a bit different just a few moments ago? Also, limbs? She yells in horror and tries to break herself free from the grasp. "Get away get away get away!" she shrieks, "Get off of me, don't touch me!" She knows she's good at kicking, at least she /should/ be so she stomps her feet at some of the tendrils. Unlike Gigi, she wasn't as high as shit, which would have explained somethings. She finally kicks and punches at one of the limbs and she jumps off of the couch, or at least tries to. She then turns to look at the group and thinks, <<None of this is real, it can't be.>> There's an obvious distortion to things and she rubs her eyes. "Stephanie?" she says, "You weren't just trying to play a horrible game of footsies on my couch were you?"
Grant rolls to a more comfortable spot happy to nap this off. Is he hugging someone's foot? There's a draft from the window that makes him try to burrow in like a bunny under a blanket. And then? His name. Cracking an eye he moves when he heads his name and his pillow moves and he almost takes a knee to the head. "Sorry Gi. Thought that was my pillow." The heel of his hand rubs at his eye socket looking around murmuring, "Steve Martin was right." The thing about dreams that are dangerous is they somehow seem natural, like the reality that's always been so one doesn't know to necessarily wake up right away and that's where Bax is now.
The short haired brunette glanced at Gigi and gave a curt "Yes" in response to her question before she turned towards Hera and she said, "I was definitely not on your couch. I was on mine, watching TV and I guess I fell asleep? I have no idea what's going on."
There's the sound of footsteps above them, as though someone were walking across the second floor, approaching a staircase that winds down from the second floor to the hallway just outside the sitting room in which they've found themselves.
Leg poke, if just to prove Stephanie's curt reply, or maybe because she got a curt reply. "Cool, nice leg." Gigi rolls around to sit on her butt facing the window and wraps arms, rubbing them against the chill coming in through the window. "It's ''pillowy'' sure." To Grant, grunting as she pulls herself up with hands hooked beneath the cushions of the couch. That's when she hears the steps above them. A glance up and over at the stairs, then around at the trio who woke with her in a tangle, "That's not at all omenous." Her eyes drop down to Bax, brow raised.
Stephanie, remaining silent, keeps herself covered, watching the staircase just outside the sitting room. She can hear someone's footsteps and if they show any signs of hostility, she knows what she wants to do.
Hera hears the footsteps as well and if that doesn't make her tremble enough, the chill in the air does. She begins to wrap her arms around herself and convulses a little, mainly out of fear. "Get a grip get a grip get a grip" she tells herself over and over again and, the words work for a bit but she steps away from the staircase. "This is...unnatural." Yes, the pretty ginger lady seems to have a nack for stating the obvious, none of this can be real.
Grant looks around and slides to the edge of the couch and noticed he's shorter than usual. Huh. His feet dangle just off the floor, but he DOES check to see if the floor is lava before hopping down. He looks up at the ceiling and notes the step and looks around at the over-large living room. "Big living room means big kitchen meeeeans the cookies are.." He pushes off the couch to land on the floor. "Also bigger." Yes, he's still thinking about food.
The sound of the footsteps upstairs continue to move at a slow unhurried pace toward the steps, and then begin to descend. Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump. It takes several stairs before a pair of feet can be seen, followed by a pair of legs, and on upward as the figure finally reveals itself. What each person sees as they look toward the descending figure is a little bit different. Each person sees in this figure someone that they find attractive, but also someone whose opinion matters to them very, very much. Someone that they definitely didn't expect to see in this strange house.
Stephanie comes out of hiding and she somehow feels a lot more tense when she sees who emerges from the staircase. She maintains a stoic look on her face, glancing around at the other people in the room to see their reactions.
Giada looks around slowly over to Hera... even reaches out like she's going to lay a hand on the ginger's shoulder, "Hey... it's alright. It's just a bad trip... I've been in this same situation, but it was a Longhorns bathroom... The footsteps were the Manger telling me to ''get the hell out'' and ''stop causing a scene or I'd be banned''." The best of intentions aren't always the best delivered. Hand on shoulder or not, it falls back down to her side when she looks back towards the stairs. "Well, best to not all be standing around in their living room with our dicks in our hands when they come downstairs..." Dammit Bax. Now she's looking towards the kitchen, at least until the footsteps are descending the stairs drawing Gi's attention got the legs. Whoever she sees has her grinning wide enough to split her face and moving in that direction, "Jesus fucking Christ, babe. You scared the shit out of me. I don't know how you did this, but... ten of ten... seriously, five star yelp review. Tables weren't clean, but the shit my pants scares were excellent."
Over on the couch, Mr. Lump that can sleep through out bound artillery fire and helo's taking off, begins to stir and looks up. "Huh?" is yawned out be Devlin, "did I leave the door open again after grilling?" He then begins to focus that others are here.. "Hey... who turned off Orville? I was watching that.." wake up brain moving slowly through figuring things out.
Hera feels a tiny bit of comfort at what Giada tells her, but she just doesn't think that it's a 'bad trip.' When the figure reveals itself to her, she says, "Jessica what...what are you doing here? I mean, this isn't your boat and." She looks over at the dusty couch. Yeah, Jessica is a busy lady but she doesn't look like the type to keep things untidy. She then shakes her head and looks over at Giada again, "No no no, if it was a bad trip, Jessica wouldn't be here, she's always known the way to say the right thing to me."
Stephanie looks over at Devlin as he stirs and then looks over at the person who'd come down from the staircase, her partner's exact identical, and she ignored the one who came from the second floor. "In case you didn't notice, Dev, we're not exactly supposed to be here. At least I know I'm not," Stephanie says to him.
Grant is totally tripping. That he dropped acid before he started to sit down to paint leaves no question when his eyes light up at the figure, "Well hello, neighbor." There's a grin as he waders over towards them with no hurry, fingers pushing back through his hair and boggles at them, "I didn't turn off the Orville. I'm a grab food anyone want any?" He looks to the figure and splays a hand on his chest, "I promise... I'm sharing. How's King Friday? What's he up to these days?"
The figure on the stairs looks at the assembled group and lifts one finger to its lips and makes a quiet "Shhhhhh" sound. And as it does so, all sound in the place deadens. When they go to speak, no sound comes out. If they stamp their feet, clap their hands, pound on the walls, no sound comes out. The entire place has become completely silent. The figure on the steps crooks a finger, and beckons them upstairs, before turning and ascending back the way that it came.
"If they have a PBR in the fridge, would you grab me one?" Over her shoulder to Bax, "Or a sandwich... god I'd kill for a sandwich right now." Scratching at her hair through the beanie, but everything continues to be just a little off. Jessica? "No, that's Kai.." Is it though? She's cer-....." Her lips keep moving, but nothing is coming out... Which isn't how talking is suppose to work. At the beckoning, her brow curls in tight over her thin brow. "....." Shaking her head, hands up in the air as she soundlessly moves towards the stairs. "...." Lips moving as she climbs them, two steps forward... one step back. "....." Almost certainly singing Paula Abdul... Up she goes.
Looking around and taking things in as he wakes up, Devlin just sighs.. and then realizes something is off as the sigh is suddenly cut off in the middle. He gets that WTF expression in his face and tries to curse in Arabic... nope, that did not work either. But seeing a old paramedic from the NYFD beckon... he shrugs and then starts to follow. Though now his expression is shifting to one of cautious curiosity.
"W..." The sound of her voice is no longer audible and Stephanie is confused. Was she the only one thinking it was a bad idea to follow? Still she couldn't let herself be split from those she knew so she decided she would follow Hera, just to make sure the redhead had someone who would have her back.
"Jess..." it's then that she realizes talking does her no good, no good at all. It seems as if everything has gone quiet, totally quiet. <<Listen to me!>> she tries to mouth <<This isn't making any sense!>> She goes from frightened to furious and even ends up stomping her foot. That doesn't do any good either. While her cousin gets a bit of a WTF expression, so does she. Normally, she's a very good leader, but this time her skills forsake her. She looks over to him, then to Stephanie, then to him. She tries to say, "You wouldn't harm us Jessica, you definitely wouldn't." Silence is the only thing that is said. It that really her though? Also, maybe she can think it, but not say it. The temptation is to follow the visage of the dark haired journalist, and when others walk on, she does as well.
Grant looks around and checks his ears actually. He pulls one hearing aid out to futz with. Huh. Well then. But he looks up to the gesture to follow and gets a grin sticking it back in. He signs <<Oh, a game? Sure. Someone sleeping?>> He turns to Giada and the rest making some gestures that unless they were signers may mean nothing but for both hands under his head like a pillow and then pointing upstairs. Maybe someone's sleeping? hey, When Mr. Rogers asks you to do something you try to be helpful right? He follows.
The figure climbs the steps to the second floor and turns the corner, passing out of sight. There are no footsteps this time, because the silence prevails, so they are unable to see where the figure went exactly as they climb the stairs. What they can see, however, is that as soon as Hera takes a step onto the staircase, something begins to happen.
Where the carpet runner that lines the steps was once dingy and worn, threadbare in places, the pattern starts to knit itself back together again, the grey going out of the white, which becomes crisp and clean. The blues become more vibrant, the violets become a deep shade, and the fabric seems to have new life within it. The change begins beneath Hera's feet and both ascends and descends the staircase away from her, until the entire runner is restored as though it were new.
It doesn't stop there, however. As they reach the second floor, the dingy pitted hardwood floors of the second floor landing also begin to gleam as though they had just been refinished, and the wallpaper uncurls, spots that had opened up in it seal, and bits that were peeling re-adhere, the patterns becoming as they might once have been before decay set in. All of this unfolds before them in silence.
At the top, they find themselves at the end of a long hall, the figure at the very end, turning the corner and disappearing off to the left.
Perhaps relieved for the forced silence, Stephanie decides to sprint ahead towards the direction the figure had gone, perhaps relieved that she wasn't able to give Hera or Devlin a warning about where she was going. Instinct or impulse, maybe it's time to let something else guide her.
That is not something you see every day.
Gigi watches the carpet restore beneath her feet and almost jumps out of her shoes trying to get away from it, which ends up with her sitting awkwardly on the railing running up along the steps until she's certain it wont restore her liver... or replace lost braincells... only then does she touch a toe to it. QUICKLY pulling it back just in case. Like a kid testing the bathtub water... Or Bax making sure the floor isn't lava.
<<Get it together... this is just the acid.>> When you've done as much LCD as she has, reality becomes more of a guideline than a rule... After the initial shock, she moves upwards along the steps, quietly because that's the rules in this place, until she's standing at the end of the hallway watching Kai disappear around the corner. No amount of shouting is producing any noise, however.. so she does what any sane person would do. Follow her.
It's almost singleminded, at this point.
More so as Stephanie rushes past down the hall..
He blinks seeing things restore like something out of one of those fiction movies. Devlin tries to say something, good guess something on the order of, * Damnnnnn * . He takes a deep breath and continues to follow the figure, hopefully answers will just need him to Walk This Way... his stride steady but swift.. lessons learned from long ago.. running in a building can be deadly.
Hera blinks and just about does a doubletake as she sees things shift before and below her. <<What the?>> She asks, wondering if she, too, might have been slipped some acid herself. Maybe she needs to talk to Leon about getting those cameras setup ASAP. If people are sneaking into her home and giving her acid? Yeah, this definitely pales in comparison to passing out after drinking too much vodka. She casts a look to Devlin as if to ask, using her expression, <<Does this make any sense to you?>> But, things have gotten more vivid so, it's got to get better right?
Look... the floor can be lava at any time. The wise person checks so they don't lose a sneaker.
Mr. Rogers is leaving? Ack! Now if Giada got into any LSD he had stashed away at the trailer that Greg stocked up there? Well he's not taking responsibility for that. If ti turns out good? Well he totally will. He taps Devlin on the shoulder and points and follows Hera up the stairs and stops. His eyes go wide and hesitantly his fingers reach out to touch the runner to see how real real is or if it's Weaveworld real. Looking at things change this seems an invitation to run and touch all the things.
Seriously, his inner 12 year old is running lose unsupervised. Fists held high above his head he barrels up the stairs making the WOOOOOOOOOO face. You know the one. Hitting the landing his fingers reach out to the doors to see if they get any cleaner then the wallpaper and... wait what the hell was happening again? He pauses eyeing the wallpaper trying to figure out if it is the lickable Wonka stuff oooor- oh. yeah. Figure heading around the corner. Dude, on this. And re-calibrating he makes sure Giada isn't too far as he points.
In the hall, Stephanie takes the lead as she takes off after the figure that turns the corner at the end, leaving the others behind. And strangely, she seems to move even faster than the rest of them, as she nearly catches up to the figure before she finds herself in front of a wall. There is nowhere to turn. The figure is gone, having turned left and simply vanished. But behind her, the hall has stretched, leaving her far from the others who are moving to catch up behind her.
Behind them, there is a similar wall. The staircase is gone, and there is no way back down to the first floor. There is just a long featureless hallway filled with doors that are closed. And if Grant licks the wallpaper, he gets a mouth full of dust. Tastes like house.
It is at that moment that sound comes rushing back in, and they can hear one another again, the sound of their footsteps, their voices, their breathing as they run. The house itself is quiet and still, however. But not that quiet.
"-ar what I want to... you saaaay..." Gigi was mid singing, enjoying the quiet because it let her engage in recreational pop music to aleviate some of the tension building in her brain-meat at how bad this trip had turned on her. "You... uh.. say..." Scratching at her neck, glancing around awkwardly, and then down the hall at Staphanie. "Hey! Sounds' back down here? Can you hear me now?" Cupping her hands around her mouth to shout.
Then turning towards one of the doors to give the knob a little jiggle. What with the stairs being gone, it falls upon them to find their escape route from this house of horrors. "I know we're going to laugh about this later, but right now I really need a bathroom, so if anyone finds the water closet, let a bitch know, huh?" Humor is a defensive trait. Plus, she does really deal in the weird pretty frequently. So it's easy to write a lot of this off as just bad drugs.
Or really really good drugs.
That doesn't make it okay, though.
Striding down the hall at a swift pace, Devlin stops once he realizes things have changed unexpectedly again. He says more to himself, "Where did that guy go? Let alone.. why the walls? Starting to feel like one of those Steven King novels..." He looks up and then down the hall before moving to where Hera is. "You ok? And no, I haven't got a clue.. and I don't see anyone to buy a vowel from either..." He takes a deep breath. "Just time to be calm and observant."
Stephanie can hear voices getting louder and louder as the others catch up. She takes a look around, taking calm and even breaths. She closes her eyes for a moment to attempt to detect other forms of life, aside from the people she was with earlier, people she would recognise.
<FS3> Stephanie rolls Mental: Success (8 7 5 1) (Rolled by: Stephanie)
Hera hears everyone else and her eyes go wide. Something is going right so that, in and of itself, shocks her. "Guy, there's no guy down there." she tells Devlin, "Jessica was there and then she just, poofed, I think, I mean, I don't know!" She gestures to Giada instead of pointing because, you know, pointing is rude, "She was just telling me that someone must have slipped into Vivid Dreams and put LSD in all my bottles of wine." Yup LSD and alcohol, what could go wrong? "But I, guess I'm ok. I mean there were these things grabbing me worse than Everette did I mean hell, those things grabbing me made me thing that big lug was as nice as a furry bunny on Easter." She is still bewildered and asks, "Do you have ANY idea what's going on?" Then Stephanie is a bit farther from the crowd, that's not good. She calls out after her, "Stephanie! My god, are you ok?"
Grant totally picks up on Giada's groove... however it's Bax and when you grow up hearing things different you also tend to remember all the wrong lyrics.
"So I, I turn the radio on,
I blow the radio up..."
The skate punk pauses to look at the walls and runs his finger over it with a critical eye. "Aww, paper no...You had so much potential." No scratchy sniff paper either. Looking to Hera he looks confused and then over his shoulder and around in a circle. "Where'd the kitchen go?" Not the stairs but the food on the other end of them.
with the endless hallway he gestures, "Well, my guess iiiiis it's bed time and we should probably go to sleep or tomorrow it will not be our birthday and that means?" He looks to them all with a serious expression, "No cake." Seriously Greg keeps all teh good shit at their place. Turning to the nearest door he knocks quietly, and whisper yells, "Heeeey, hey don't mean to wake you up but were looking for the staircase. Is it in there with you?"
As Stephanie reaches out with her mind, she can easily sense the others with her -- Devlin, Grant, Giada, and Hera. But she can also sense many, many other minds, too many for her to count, really, minds in all of those rooms with their closed doors, minds that she can't recognize.
When Giada reaches out to grab one of the doorknobs and give it a jiggle, it comes off in her hand and she hears an irritated voice on the other side of the door say, "Well fuck, now how am I going to get out? What the hell do you think you're doing?" It's an older man's voice, probably in his sixties, and he sounds downright disgruntled.
When Grant knocks on one of the doors, he hears a soft knocking back that echoes his own knock.
Looks up and then down the hallway.. he frowns a bit for a moment, "Well Hera.. we can try a door.." He looks over as he hears the voice complain about not being able to get out... and then Grant's knocking with knock back? He pauses to allow Stephanie to get closer. "Any ideas?" he asks of his partner.
Stephanie barely registers Beth's voice calling out to her while concentrating and it isn't until she senses them with her mind that she realises that they are close. She doesn't move too far, doesn't rejoin the group. She seems to be in a sort of a trance, in her own little world. Turning to a nearby doorknob, she attempts to pick the lock with her mind.
<FS3> Stephanie rolls Physical: Success (8 6 5 3 2) (Rolled by: Stephanie)
"Whoa, that's how rumors get started..." Gigi says to Hera, "I don't know anything about someone slipping into Vivid Dreams to spike your bottles with Acid, okay? I'm just saying this is a really bad trip..." The knob comes off in her hand and she looks down at it as it is slowly turned over to... you know just sort of appreciate the knobbiness. "Bax... catch." Tossing it underhand in his direction, all but ignoring the creepy old voice from the other side. Certain of very few things right now, other than, she's pretty okay with him staying his disgruntled ass on the otherside of that door.
Old guys always have brooms.
Some have shotguns.
All of them with judgement.
Gray Harbor amirite?
She reaches up to scratch the back of her neck, turning in a slow circle to gaze at all the room with squinty face. "Wait a second, there was stairs right?" <<Snap out of it, you already covered this>> "I.. okay..." Hands out, nodding, "Something very strange is afoot at the Circle K.." Like stephanie down there going in a trance. "Uhhh... do you want Demonic possession? Because ''that's'' how you get demonic possession..." Pointing a warning finger at trance-lady.
Hera tries to look over at the doors, as if wondering which one would be the best to take. "Yeah that's it." she says, "Perfect pottery lady figures out which knob to pull, my best guess is to try to open the one that has a secure knob. I also didn't realize I could apparently 'trip out' with a bunch of people all at once. Here I thought I experienced the real world more than I should but," she snaps her fingers, "That's it! I'm not in the real world anymore. I'm just going to wake up, cuddled with my dog, and I'm going to get Leon to take off all my door knobs in my house, yup, that's what's on the agenda." She's likely jibber jabbering a bit because none of this is really making sense to her.
Grant has one ear pressed to the door and taptaptaps back it's a different rhythm *tap t-tap-tap tap*Hearing his name though the skater boy snaps his attention up and plucks the knob out of the air. More sober he looks to Hera and says with a small nod to her, "Well, you can go home. I'm gonna see if I can help this person out. If they need it I mean... " There's confusion and he boggles to Giada, "Why you giving my knob a toss?" God he's so 12 to ask a simple question. Looking back to the door he asks, "Hey you okay in there? You know where the stairs went?"
Stephanie is easily able to pick the lock of the door that she attempts to open. Inside, she finds a modern looking apartment, much larger than one might expect to find between the doors that seem so evenly spaced down the hall. It appears to be empty at first glance, though from the windows on the balcony she can see the ocean beyond, and it appears to be daytime.
The old man behind the door continues to berate Giada from the other side of the door. "You put that back, you good for nothing wasterel!"
When Grant tap tap taps on the door, he hears an echoing tap tap tap back in exactly the same pattern. Though when he asks through the door he hears a quiet voice murmur back, "No, I'm not okay. I don't know where the stairs went. Are there stairs? What's out there? Can you let me out?"
With a shrug, Devlin tries a door near himself. "May as well see what is on the other side.. must be some sort of riddle." He first knocks on the door before he tries the knob to see if it is locked. "This should be a good as any, Hera."
Hera follows behind Devlin, letting him take the lead for now, at least when it comes to finding the right door. "If it explodes well." she thinks for a second and says, "Why do I think you could handle that better than any of us?"
If anyone happened to be looking, they would see that Stephanie manages to open a door, and is walking into it, and then the door closes behind her. There, she would walk around quietly and investigate. "Hello?" she calls out gently, "The door was open, I wanted to see if everything was okay here."
"If it's any consolation, you don't really know if we're real either." Gigi says to Hera, leaning towards the ginger with a helpful smile, "If I were an evil entity that wanted to trick me into a false sense of security by mimicing a bad acid trip, I would definitely implant the possibility of similarly trapped individuals.. that whole ''safety in numbers'' thing that rarely ever plays out very well in horror movies?" She's looking along the rows of doors, voice growing quieter as she continues to inspect each of the portals in turn. "But I'm definitely having premarital sex and doing drugs, so I'll be one of the first to die.. You've got at least that long to fix the fuse box." She's been playing a lot of Friday the 13th while tripping her nuts off.
"Maybe I'll come back as Tommy Jarvis." Musing for the sake of hearing her own voice, "He spawns with a shotgun..."
Glancing back at Grant, she shruuuuugs at his question, "It's been a while since I tossed a knob.. it seemed like a good time for it." Nope, she's not okay with the old man talking to her, not one bit. Instead of trying to get the knob back, however, she slams her shoulder into the closed door. "Give us a second, mate. I'm going to come on inside and you can say that to my face."
Grant holds up the knob (the door knob) and gives one sharp whistle. "Gi...Like... remind me to teach you about these thing later. Man." He tosses the knob back to her to try to get it open.
Taking a deep breath he looks to Hera and Devlin adn Stephanie, "Hey!" That done he watches them and quietly explains, "I think... Mr. Rogers brought us here to help our neighbors out. They are stuck." Yup. He sounds like a crazy person. There's so much conviction there!
Reaching into his sock he works on pulling out a set of lock picks that he has with him and the skate key around his neck. Tapping on the door he says "Hey, uhhh neighbor. I'm Bax. What's your name? Can you tell me what your side of the door looks like?" He can go at this for however long. Aren't we glad we adventure with people on a sliding scale.
Devlin tries a door of his own, knocking once and then opening it. There's no resistance to his attempt to open the door. It swings inward to reveal a dingy little room and the heat coming from inside pretty much causes a blast of air to hit Hera and Devlin in the face, smelling of sand and a dry heat that is in sharp contrast to the world that they'd gone to sleep in.
Stephanie walks into the apartment. When she calls out, there is no answer. The apartment itself seems to be empty, though furnished. That is, until finally that figure she saw before appears from around a corner and stands there in the hall, studying her. "Everything is fine," it says, in the voice that she expects to hear.
The old man continues to mutter behind the door and there's the sound of heavy furniture or something scraping across the floor. When she throws her shoulder into the door, there's an answering pound in return, as though something blunt and heavy were slammed against it.
The voice behind the door that Grant is next to says, "My name is Peter, and the door looks like a door. It's wood. It has a knob and hinges. It opens into the room. It's blue."
Stephanie is mildly startled at the sound of the familiar voice. She quietly asks, "Are you sure?" She approaches carefully, looking to the figure, with the voice that she knows does not belong to it.
Grant tosses the knob back to Gigi and she catches it in both hands, "Hey, old dude, I'm going to open this door... if you hit me with a bag full of hard candy, I'm going to be cross as fuck.." Popping the thingy back in the thingy hole to give it a little wiggle wiggle test to see if it'll open the portal up. "I'm not fucking kidding, do not hit me with a shuffle board. I will legit fuck you up." She's still pretty sure she's tripping, even all this time later, but now she's trying to figure out the way out of the bad part of the high. Like a chose your own adventure of psychedelics. Ultimately, all signs point to projectile Werther's Original.
Instinctively, Devlin takes a low stance rather than a crouch as he stands there. "Could be either Iraq or Afghanistan.." He frowns a bit, "weird.." He looks to Hera for a moment, "Not a place I would really want to introduce you too." He then tries Arabic, < Hello, anyone home? >
<FS3> Stephanie rolls Mental: Success (8 4 3 2) (Rolled by: Stephanie)
Things have gotten wierd, and they seem to only get wierder yet. The smelling of sand makes her cough a little, on instinct if nothing else. "Is the Sahara in there or something cousin?" She winces a little, but stays by his side. "Someone needs to get that AC fixed or something. It's been a long time since I felt this much heat, like that." Somehow she still doubts things are going to be normal as they venture on.
Grant replies to Peter, giving a glance in the hallway for Mr. Rogers or the others keeping an eye on things. His tone is kept friendly enough, "Don't suppose you have anything strong and thin and metal like a shelf bracket?" He tries just turning the knob to see if it opens. He also knocks on it and says "Please open, door." Because maybe manners count. He tries again. "Pete, my name is Grant. Nice to meet you." Looking down the hall he says "Gi, do't like get lost on me."
Stephanie watches the figure as she tries to scan for other living beings in the apartment, her eyes turning solid white as she focuses.
"Of course," the figure says to Stephanie. "Why wouldn't it be?" It regards her curiously, with exactly the voice that should belong to the person it represents. The mannerisms are just slightly off, however, enough so to be unsettling this close. "Are you sure that you're feeling alright? Would you like to sit down?" The figure regards her uncertainly. Her mental scan of the room reveals two more presences further down the hall.
Giada gets the whatsit back in the thingermajigger and gives it a little wiggledyjiggle and the door does indeed pop open. Inside, is a decidedly disgruntled looking older gentleman that looks suspiciously like Sam Elliot. And in his hand he is wielding the biggest burrito that Giada has ever seen. She only gets to really /see/ it for a moment though, because Sam comes barreling out of the room and swats her with it, like a giant, squishy guacamole-filled baseball bat. There is a squishing sound as she is suddenly coated from head to toe in burrito innards, as well as a good portion of the section of the hall that she is standing in.
There is no answer from within the room that Devlin has opened when he calls out in Arabic. Though in the distance he can hear the distinct sound of gunfire. It's a familiar sound, to him, those assault rifles. There's the sound of voices in the distance, but they are indistinct, and through the dingy windows there is a plume of dust and debris. That door seems decidedly unsafe.
When Grant asks the door to open and turns the knob, it opens right up, and inside there is what appears to be a child's bedroom decorated all in planets and stars. The walls are littered with those glow in the dark stars and planets and painted black, shades of dark blue, and purple, making it all a night sky. Peter appears to be a boy of about nine or ten, and he too glows like a glow in the dark star, his skin having that kind of pale almost greenish glow to it. He smiles a brilliant smile at Grant and says, "Thank you. I should be in the sky, but I got trapped here, and it's just not the same." He fades a little, some of his glow flickering.
"I'm all right, just going to go to the powder room real quick." And Stephanie makes a beeline towards the hall where she senses other living beings to investigate.
"Crap.. Hera.. that is fighting out there." Devlin's tone carrying the tone of experience and authority. "And me without my gear.. just wonderful.. Ok, I'll try to get a look at things. Stay by the door and keep low." He takes a calming breath and slowly with a degree of caution towards the door.
"Hey Bax, we need to come up with a secret code phrase incase we're seperated and replaced by lizard people..." Because that could happen, this is acid people, Gi tries the knob once more again, glancing down the hall at everyone doing their disappearing into wherever they're going thing, "See? Now when they show up we'll have no idea if it's the real them or a lizard replacement them..." Tapping her temple. "So the code- OMFG Virgil Earp?!" That's actually a pretty good code, if you think about it. Then she's covered in burrito guts... Standing in a hallway.. with Sam Elliot.
Gigi opens her hands out and raises her arms a little to look down at herself, "Dude, why? Why did you do this? Why is this a thing that's happened?" Her finger scoops through some of the guac, sucking it from her fingertip, "Okay, no this is pretty good..." Pointing at the meaty chunks on her jacket before plucking off a finger pinch to pop in her mouth, "Mmmmm... dreamrito... Calm your tits, Sam Elliot, seriously. You're like 74 years old, you'll have a stroke."
HAHAHA nah, Sam Elliot is immortal bruh.
Hera stands tall and takes a deep breath. In that moment she gathers up her courage and inner strength. None of this makes sense, but she's not going to let her cousin down. "If you yell" she tells him, "I'm coming running after you. You don't have to do this alone cousin. There's other ways to fight besides using weapons." She tries to be motivational, even if she doesn't truly know what's going on. For now, she does as he suggests and stays by the door.
"Certainly, dear, it's right through here," the figure says to Stephanie as she heads toward the restroom down the hall, stepping out of her way so that she can move past. As she heads down the hall, she can see the bathroom, and what appears to be a guest room, and then an office. When she gets to the door of the office she sees two men standing there drinking cups of coffee. They seem a little startled to see her, each of them dressed in a white orderlies uniform. They glance at each other, and then at her, and give her a nod of greeting, then resume sipping their coffee in tandem.
When Devlin moves into the room, he can feel the heat, that familiar dryness in his lungs. He can hear more clearly the voices outside now. Afghanistan, it certainly seems more certain now that he's inside. He can tell from the voices, some of the architecture that he can see more clearly through the dusty windows now that he's in the room proper. The commotion seems to be coming from further up the street than where the room is in which he stands, but it's difficult to see much from inside. A set of stairs lead down to the first floor. Hera, from her position by the door, has a view of Devlin inside the room, but also Giada being engulfed in burrito, and Grant opening up the door further down the hall. Stephanie has simply gone into her room and vanished.
Dream Sam Elliot says, "That's for stealing my knob." He then turns around, goes back into the room, and slams the door shut, hard enough that it shakes the wall that is on and the doorknob falls off again, onto the hall floor, where it rolls around a bit.
Grant grins to Giada, "Virgil is fire, Gi. Totally team Virgil Earp." And then? The door cracks open and that wonder holds. He pushes it open and comes in side the room looking around with his grin widening. "Niiiiice!" He gets a good look around and then to teh glowing lad. "Me too man, but for different reasons." He looks at him without gawking or shaking him like a lamp and asks, "You from off world then?" The smile hits his eyes and says, "Someday I hope to go back. Right now, maybe we can help you out and I can come visit. What happened, Peter?"
"I don't remember," Peter says to Grant when he asks what happened. "I was sleeping, and then I woke up and I was here. And I couldn't get out again." The door seems a normal enough door, but for whatever reason, Peter was unable to open it from inside. However, if Grant tries to open it, it opens and closes without any problem for him. Peter scuffs one foot on the floor and says, "It's a nice enough room. But I don't belong here."
Stephanie looks at the two people in orderlies uniforms a little confused. "I don't know how I got here. I think I might have gone into the wrong apartment. Could you guys tell me where I am?" she asks, playing up the lost act. She looks over her shoulder, wondering if the figure with her partner's voice followed her.
"Jerk." Gigi says to Sam Dreamiot, scooping up the doorknob from the floor where it rolls around. She immediately turns and throws it down the hall, "I threw your fucking doorknob down the hall.. I hope they cancel the Ranch." She doesn't, she loves that show. "Dammit.." Watching the doorknob roll around down the hall... Her head lulls back, arms flopping out at her side, "I'm not going to get it.." Repeating it at least two more times before flailing around like a child and jogging in the direction she threw the knob... then jogging back. "Sam Elliot, I'm coming in there okay? Let's talk this out buddy.. Let's be pals. I'm real nice, plus I'm bringing burito. I've never said this to a man in my life, but you can totally eat some off my chest." Thingy into doohicky, wiggle wiggle.
"I'm going down the stairs, Hera.. if you want come to the top of them as I go down them. I have a feeling not going to be able to see out the windows due to the dust outside." Devlin then starts moving slowly. His steps careful as he transitions weight from one foot to the other on the steps. All the while he pauses at random or when there are louder noises to see if he can figure out what is going on by the sound alone.
Hera stares out into the distance as she sees well, again, comeplete strangeness. "I'm coming." She says, taking a different role than she's used to, at least lately. If a leader can make a good follower, then that would prove to be yet another virtue she can master. "I think I saw Stephanie...disappear? Like, gone? I'm not sure what I saw. How in the hell does a smell like this just come out of nowhere?" She then goes quiet for a bit as she takes her position at the top of the stairs.
Grant looks for a window and looks back to Peter with that calm confidence, "Gi, knock and ask it politely." He calls over his shoulder, helping. Looking back to Peter the skater smiles easily and says, "I'm gonna help you out. What's your favourite thing to do in the sky? I was in a ship once and got to see only a bit of it. So. Cool." Talk about a new kinda drug, space travel is addictive. He goes to open the door and hold it open, "Well let's try this. After you, neighbor."
The two men study Stephanie and then they both set their coffee down and begin to approach her. The first one says, "We can make sure that you're okay. Why don't you just come with us? It's jut down the hall." When she does look to see if the figure followed her, she finds them still standing in the hall, hands folded in front of them, watching her as she comes back out of the room. "You're confused," the figure says. "It's okay. We're going to help you."
Unfortunately, the doorknob does not go back on the door that Giada had been messing with. No matter what she tries to do, the knob simply keeps falling off, and there is no further response from that room. The burrito is tasty, though.
As Devlin descends the stairs, he can continue to hear the sounds of fighting in the distance. When he reaches the bottom floor it appears to be a blown-out shop. There is glass everywhere, the windows having shattered inward, and dust from the street. The place looks to have been looted. But there's a good view out onto the street from here. People huddle in nearby buildings, occasionally glancing out the windows and then disappearing again, afraid to be out in the open at all or seen from the street for more than a moment. The fighting seems to be going on further down the street, and looking in that direction, he can see vehicles parked on either side of the road, soldiers moving up ahead, sweeping through the buildings. In the opposite direction, there appears to be one lone donkey randomly strolling down the road, a dusty and haggard creature. Behind him, there is a door that is marked Private in Arabic. From the stairs, Hera can see some of the shop below and keep an eye on Devlin but not see much else.
"Shine," Peter answers simply to Grant, which might strike him as vaguely Stardust-esque, but then, Peter does seem somewhat star-like in nature. When Grant holds the door open for him, Peter walks right through it and out into the hall.
Looking back up towards were Hera is, "Stay put.. I'll be right back." Devlin takes a breath, a bit relieved that the action is moving away. "Hope they have a good medic.. and support." His curiosity though over riding some common sense.. then again, 4 tours of experience.. you just may toss some caution aside. He tries knocking on that door marked private, < Peace be upon you > he says through the door in Arabic.. as he says this.. he gets this weird feeling/thought Am I still wearing jeans and my Metalica Concert tee? and looks at himself quickly..
Well that's super frustrating. Gigi keeps trying for a few more attempts until it's pretty obvious what she's got here is an uncooperative door. At this point she stands there staring at the knob in her hand, wiggling it around in her palm a few times, "Hey." Glancing back over her shoulder in Grant's direction then back at the door, she brings up her hand to wrap her knuckles against it. "Hey..." Repeating the greeting, "I think we got off on the wrong foot. Sidebar, burito is hella good... primary point, let me.. uh.. help you or something?" Knock knock, "If this is about me saying I hope they cancel the Ranch, I was just kidding. I think you're the tits on that show.." Bringing up the doorknob as if Sam might see it through the wooden entrance, "I brought your knob back. I shouldn't have just tried to barge in, that wasn't cool. So, millenigan?" Millennial-Mulligan. Generaltional golf references are fun.
"No no no no no, I don't need help, I just need to leave," Stephanie blurts out as she takes a step back for every step forward the orderlies make. She turns to the strange figure as she asks, "Why Devlin's voice?"
"Stay put." she says, "The worst thing that anyone in a horror movie can say. Oh look there's a monster out there, let's all split up so we can be more likely to get our butt kicked." She does what he suggests though, for now. At this point Devlin and Hera are probably a fair distance away, yet she folds her arms over her chest and taps her foot as she's quiet anxious. She has no idea what could be said in Arabic, even if she could get close enough to Devlin to see what he is seeing.
Grant just grins at Star-Boy and says, "Can't wait to see that. C'mon let's... get you out and up. And walks out with him making sure Peter gets out first. "Hey, stick by me. Got some friends out here and we'll figure it out. You know anyhting about where this place is?" He sticks to his word and by the glowing kid "That's my friend Giada over there. I think we might... not be stuck. I dunno. Never thought about going outside. If we find a window though..."
There is no answer at the door when Devlin knocks on it. He hears nothing coming from behind it either. It just seems to be a closed door. Hera remains safely at the top of the stairs. All is quiet except, you know, the war going on a little bit down the road.
Giada, likewise, gets no response from the door. Apparently Sam Elliot has nothing further to say to her at the moment, and no amount of pleading gains further response from the door.
Stephanie, however, is slowly approached by the two men in white. The figure smiles, a smile that definitely doesn't belong on that face, because the teeth are decidedly sharp, and the eyes a little too dark. "So that you wouldn't panic, dear. Now come along quietly." The men in white reach for her then, attempting to each one grab her by the arm.
Peter seems happy to follow Grant around. Grant is going to get him back to the sky, and that seems to make Peter glow just a little bit brighter. He waves a hand at Giada though looks at her curiously, all covered in burrito as she is.
Well, may as well go for it. But first Hera, "If you want, come down just short of the end of the stairs. This is some sort of shop.. the fighting is moving away from us for the moment. I want to check something and then we get out of here, ok? And be ready to run back up if you have too. Do not wait for me." Devlin then shrugs, "no guts.. no glory.. may be figure out why here?" He then opens the door labeled private. "here goes nothing.."
"Baaaaaax..." Gigi motions at the door, that silent door behind which actor of stage and screen Sam Elliot is doing whatever it is hiding. "I tried the polite stuff..." Eyeing Peter then, hand up to wave awkwardly with a glance down at her burrito suit, "Hey, you, person from other door.. How do I get in here?" Thumbing at her own door, knob clutched in her palm.
Hera yells down the steps and says, "Bullshit" she screams, "I'm waiting for you cousin, I'll follow your lead but I'm not taking all of your orders." She makes her way down the steps until she gets tot he bottom. "Why do I think that if Escher and Dali had a child, it would create something like this, seriously." Maybe her comment is a bit 'trippy' in and of itself but she does follow him, leaving the stairs behind if need be.
Stephanie tries to dodge out of the way of the men in white as the figure speaks to her. She looks defiant as this time, when her eyes turn solid white, it's to focus on Devlin, the real Devlin, to attempt to reach his mind. "I'm not going anywhere until you tell me where we're going!" she says, her one matching her defiant expression as her fists start to glow red.

Grant saunters out and arches an eyebrow and looks with amusement and interest to Giada and then teh door and then her. He knocks withthe back of his knuckles, "Heeeey, um, hey in there. We're offering door opening services. Did you wanna come out of there by chance?" He looks to GIada and shrugs. His eyes fall to the door knob in her hand and then back to Peter making intriductions, "Peter, this is GIada. Giada, my new friend Peter. That's... Devlin, and those people runnin around seem pretty groovy."

There is no further answer from the door Giada has chosen, even after Grant knocks on it and asks politely. It is inert. No further response will come from it.
Peter says, "Hello Giada," politely when introduced by Grant, but there is no way for them to see Devlin or Hera anymore. The two went into another room an that door stands open, but they are downstairs within that shop and out of sight. Stephanie, likewise, is nowhere to be seen and the door she chose is shut.
Which is unfortunate for Stephanie. She manages to avoid being grabbed by the first Orderly but the second one manages to get her by the arm. Meanwhile, the strange figure that is looking more and more strange as time goes on, face elongating, eyes darkening, teeth sharpening, produces a syringe. "Shhh, it's going to be okay. Don't fight it, darling."
Peter shakes his head at Giada and says, "You can't get in there. It's dead." He taps taps on the door with one glowing fingertip and nothing happens.
Meanwhile, down in the shop, Devlin opens up the door marked Private to reveal that it opens back into the first floor of the house, right back into the hallway just outside the sitting room that they'd arrived in. Someone found the wayward stairs.
Something in Stephanie snaps as she screams at the top of her lungs at the sight of the syringe, an overwhelming amount of fear can be sensed by any Mentalist within range. She reaches her hand out to attempt to create a flesh wound to harm the strange figure.

There is a bit of a chuckle on his part as he leaves the door and turns to where Hera should be. "Hera," He keeps his voice low, "There is a door to the first floor here." He grins, "Shall we get the others? May be getting out is how we manage to move on for a guess."
"So I don't need this anymore?" Gigi asks of Peter, holding up knob clutched in her fist. Without waiting for an answer she throws it over her shoulder and uses her hands to brush burrito off her jacket. "Well then I'm coming with you two. It's a spirit journey of three." Eyeing the ''dead door'' with a little frown, "I swear if Sam Elliot passes this week, I'm going to completely feel responsible somehow.. seriously, that's going really hit me in the feelbox..." Grumbling, mostly to herself, she steps up beside Bax.. "So, where are we going? What's the plan? Hopefully ''somewhere else'' because the hallway vibe is creeping me out."
Hera grumbles and says, "I figured Escher was involved somehow, seriously. Yeah, at the risk of sounding like Captain Obvious, I really think we should do what we can to find the others. Where in the world is Stephanie? I think I keep seeing her then she goes poof. I don't get it."

Grant looks around and is, weirdly(?) picking up on that panic enough to frown. An arm goes in front of Peter, "This...doesn't feel good." He looks to Giada and offers to her "Can only help people willin to be helped sometimes." His other hand goes to her shoulder to give it a comisserating squeeze. And yet... he calls to Stephanie, "HI.... Uh..." Instead he reaches out with his head trying to find Stephanie, "Hullo? You don't... seem okay you need help?" no it doesn't occur to him to use telepathy.
Unfortunately, Stephanie's attempts at injuring the syringe-wielding creepy woman are ineffective. With one orderly holding onto her, the nurse approaches and slips the syringe into her arm. There's a moment of brief chill, and then nothing. Stephanie simply slips back into unconsciousness and when she wakes, she is back in her own home, with a weird chill in her arm that she can't explain.
Meanwhile, back in the Dream, Grant loses all sense that Stephanie is even present anymore. He can no longer sense her presence at all. The only ones that he can sense are Giada, Devlin, Hera, and Peter.
Devlin and Hera continue to converse. Nothing changes for them. They're still in the shop with a battle going on in the distance, and a door open into the first floor of the house.
Devlin nods to Hera, "Gets go get them. Hope the situation out there does not change to fast.. we may not have a lot of time." He then starts heading back up the stairs. Muttering to himself, "At least this isn't some sort of screwed up candy cars...."
Hera follows Devlin but as she does she screams loud enough to try to reach Stefhanie, "Stefhanie!" She yells, "Where are you? Where did you go?" Maybe she will greet them at the top of the stairs? For whatever reason, she does want to find her and the others.
"Yeah.." Gigi keeps glancing up at the door with a pretty deep frown, "Man, that really sucks... I feel like I handled that all wrong, ya know?" She shrugs, but she's not feeling the shrug. There's a lot of fucks being given over here beneath that burrito covered beanie. "You good?" Glancing side ways at Grant, then back over her shoulder up the hallway. "Should we... we should get out of here right? I was having a lot of laughs earlier, but now it just feels like I'm never leaving, which is not helping the fact I have to pee ''at all''." Frowning even more deeper, "We're not tripping are we?"
Grant can feel Stephanie drop away, but he also went many an afternoon where he couldn't feel his own body. It still leaves that aftertaste of distress. He tells Giada, "Then we learn. And we are absolutely on what can still be a pretty great trip. It's what life really is. C'mon, Peter needs to go home to the sky." Which means looking around for those stairs to get out. The responsible adults are all...somewhere. Huh. He tries to head back to where Devlin & Co. were. "Peter, you part of a constellation family? You got a favorite?" Walking he tells them both, "Came really close to getting to visit Andromeda once. Hoping to fix that someday." He can talk casually about anything. He might have a superpower of asking 100 questions in under a minute.
When Devlin and Hera return to the hallway, Giada, Grant, and Peter are there to join them. Somehow, they all know that Stephanie is no longer there, and the harder they try to think about it, the more fuzzy the memory of her ever being there seems to become. Instead, they all descend the stairs back to the first floor. It's evident then, that there is a front door right there in the hall, and once they spot it, Peter rushes on ahead to open it up, flinging it wide. There's a beautiful night sky, and the ground is all covered with glistening snow. And as Peter runs out into the snow he starts to shine brighter, and brighter, like the star that he is. And up he goes into the sky. But the light continues to grow all around them, blinding them, until everything whites out in their vision, and when they blink their eyes to see again, they are back exactly where they were before they left.
