Dante
Dante has had seven novels and three nonfiction titles published. He's been described as 'Agatha Christie's dark cousin..' His work plays with the 'cozy' mystery genre and reintroduces blood and gore. Imagine Murder, She Wrote but with blood and guts. The other theme of his work is darkness beneath the happy and picturesque veneer of English villages, as well as supernatural taint as a metaphor for generational trauma. Many of his books take place or are inspired by the South West of England, where his family's ancestral home is.

The Merrymeet Trilogy - The Sanctuary of Neot, New Forest Dark, The Boiling Mound
A young woman private detective named Annabelle Chase tracks down a ring of occultists in the English countryside. Set in the 1950s against the backdrop of postwar England, the series explores a loss of innocence and the trauma of the spectre of death that hung over the country. Described as surprisingly sophisticated, chilling, and readable, with a flawed and realistic protagonist. Annabelle struggles with the darkness she witnesses while still outwardly projecting a sunny and optimistic demeanor. The books were optioned for a BBC miniseries, but it got stuck in development hell.
The Guarded Path - True Horror
Four young people find a literal gateway to hell in a farmer's field near their village. After entering the place, each starts to exhibit strange abilities - and the corruption from the other dimension starts to spread like a plague through their town.
Hellhounds of Wistman's Wood - Book 1 in Merrymeet Revisited
A brand-new novel where Dante returns to the world of his most successful trilogy of books. It's set in the late 1970s and is notable for featuring a gay protagonist in Declan Chase, son of Annabelle Chase, the protagonist of the first trilogy. The book is notable for being darker, gorier and more eerie, with less of the pulp overtones of the original. Some reviewers praised its more mature style and the hardboiled edge of Declan. Longtime fans of the series derided the loss of a female protagonist and criticized the gay romance that features as a through-line. It has been selling better than his standalones, but has not met with the success of the original trilogy.

Your Name Sounds Familiar - Dante is the writer of mass-market mystery novels with a supernatural flavour and horror novels. They're particularly English in their sensibility, though they have found a readership in the US and beyond. His books are the kind you might pick up for an easy read at the airport. He's also written a few nonfiction books about local myths and legends and their connections to known facts.
Fish Out of Water - Though not strictly a big city person, he's definitely not a small town American person. He's very much not from around here, and he doesn't make any attempts to blend in. In fact, he's almost always overdressed. It's rare indeed to see him out of a perfectly tailored suit. Never ties, though.
Restaurateur - Dante is the General Manager of Sitka and its attached piano bar, Eighty-Eight. The upscale restaurant is located in the Grand Olympic Casino.
Dante Taylor was born to a family with distant ties to the British aristocracy. At last count, he was 75th in line for the throne, though that spot changes almost daily as families expand and other members die off. In general though, his position has been trending further away instead of closer to any kind of royal future.
Dante spent the first decade of his life in a manor home that was his family's residence for generations, stretching back to the days when the monarchy ruled absolute and the Taylors were a minor noble family beholden to a slightly less minor noble and so on. Starting with Dante's grandfather though, the family began to modernize. His aunts and uncles had all left their ancestral home in Cornwall and moved to London or Birmingham or another major centre to live more cosmopolitan lives. But his father was a staunch traditionalist, and he refused to sell the stately and massive family home that cost a small fortune to maintain - a small fortune that they didn't have.
Eventually, the bank foreclosed on them and the Taylor family were forced to sell. For the first time in hundreds of years, a Taylor did not reside at Bowthick Manor. The sale was a blow to his father, and it put a strain on his parents' marriage. The pair divorced, and his mother took him and his siblings to live in London.
The divorce turned out to be the best thing for everyone. His traditionalist father had never been a good match for his mother, who was an ambitious and talented woman. She went back to school in London and got a law degree. Her career set the family on a better financial keel. Dante and his siblings still spent a few weeks each summer in a hunting cottage their father had bought not far from their ancestral home. He eventually remarried to a more old fashioned woman, and everyone was happier for it.
Dante's family name was no longer connected to wealth, but it had old aristocratic prestige that opened doors for him. At first that meant Eton, and then Oxford, where he studied English literature, history, and writing. He turned out to be quite talented and before he graduated, he had published his first novel. It wasn't, to the scorn of his father, a work of high literature, but a deftly-told murder mystery with supernatural elements set in a manor house modeled after Bowthick.
Books with popular appeal might not give one the respect of the literary elite, but it did quite well for Dante's bank account. Other novels followed in the series, and he began to write nonfiction books as well, about the ghost stories and folk tales of various parts of the British Isles.
He got married to an American girl named Bethany when they were both in their late twenties. They had met at a backpacker hostel in Central London when Dante was in the city to celebrate a friend's graduation and Bethany was backpacking across the UK and Europe. At the time, Dante had two novels under his belt and was starting to break further into the mainstream. They honeymooned in New England, where she was from.
It was there, in a bed and breakfast that Dante saw his first real hint of the truly supernatural. The town they were staying in happened to have a transient thin point in the veil - a momentary hole. But it was enough. His research in nonfiction and fiction titles had led him to hints of something real behind the legends, but he never truly believed it until he saw for himself.
He became obsessed with finding more of these thin points, and began to research, weaving what he found into future novels and working on a nonfiction manuscript. His single-minded focus strained things with Bethany and broke off their marriage of only three years. He also turned out to be a bit of a philanderer, and cheated on her more than once.
Since then, Dante has been chasing his research all over the world, often finding dead ends or nothing but local legends, but finding enough that was real to keep him going. He's continued to publish as he goes, in part to make sure his research and travels can continue to be funded. He's published seven works of fiction and is working on an eighth along with three nonfiction local lore volumes - two about the UK and one about New England. There's something old fashioned, but also thoroughly modern about his work. He's been called Agatha Christie's dark cousin, with an ability to infuse the old fashioned mystery and horror genre with something with more teeth and more gore. His work is strictly mass market - the kind you'd find in a train station kiosk rather than on a prestigious literary prize shortlist. He has more of a following in the UK than in the US. A signing event might get a few dozen people if he had one Stateside, where he might get a few hundred back home. He's widely read, but not the kind of writer that tends to have a dedicated fanbase.
After several false starts, Dante has made his way to Gray Harbour. He's heard rumours, that this might just be the place to truly prove that there's something beyond our realm of understanding. But he may end up with more than he bargained for. He's not aware of any abilities yet - but he does have some potential. He has peeked at the veil, but has not truly experienced what it is to Glimmer. No doubt Gray Harbor will create that opportunity whether he likes it or not.
Dark hair, kept neat. Dark eyes. A neatly-kept bit of stubble. He's a slim figure that wears the nice suits he favours well. Some might say he's classically handsome, with a strong jawline, an aquiline nose, and a well-proportioned face. He carries himself with a certain pride and bearing. but maybe a touch of arrogance as well. There's something sharkish about him, whether he wants to be or not.
