Harper
Fellow classmate and local. The two became close-r friends sophomore year of high school. An unlikely pair, they went to one dance together but never dated, though they did have a two-person book club; the reading mostly happened on Harper's end. She visited him frequently and reliably during his prison years. When he returned to Gray Harbor after that they picked up their friendship. The once demonstrative friends are an item since sometime around the plague that hit GH in 2019. Ask Harper a question about Geoff and watch that inimitable smile light up her face. He has had quite an effect on the librarian, drawing out her reckless side so it's not nearly such a secret.
Harper's best friend from High School. It all started with the library; and everything good in the world can be traced back to the library. Given their history, the pair know each other too well and tend toward a banter that could peel the paint off just about anything. Clearly an affectionate, lasting friendship. Harper regularly visits Jessica when the reporter is working late nights at the Gazette; and sometimes they are sources of information for each other. All bets are off during Girls-Nights on Jessica's houseboat. Confident women for the win.
Fellow classmate (2009). Dear friend from at least high school if not farther back. He's had her back more times than not. Even when she had no idea. Harper is loyal to Tobin to a fault and perhaps thinks that her orange-cranberry muffins are what keep the Evil at bay for him. Potential resource for her further education in Glimmery knowledge.
Harper first met Easton at a charity paintball match. She then met him more specifically in a comical case of mistaken identity. He's part of a package deal. You get Geoff? You get Easton. She doesn't seem to mind the marriage. And she knows to insult the man and allow for trash beer. He might even be quickly becoming her favorite S.O.B. The ex-marine has all sorts of leeway due to his relationship with Geoff. Harper may or may not have seen him naked. She's not telling. But she'll drink champagne with Bennie and watch. Never underestimate the librarian.
New to town. Got his driver's license then came to get his library card. The man has his priorities right. Charming, despite himself; he proclaimed Her library satisfactory. Harper isn't positive, but she'd be willing to bet he's a DA. She'll have the 'Twilight' series ready for him to check out on his next visit to the library. Harper'll do the best she can to keep your info off the grid.
... and Graham. The Charlie to his angel. Club members. Now to figure out the club. They're so sweet, it's distracting.

New author in town. The New York Spaniard does his writing at the library sometimes, much to Harper's delight. How can a librarian resist that? Also, her favorite secret agent..
New acquaintance. Broken and brings out all of Harper's need to fix, to help. A brief picnic on the beach. A date to go shopping for interview clothes. And a scathing reprimand from Alexander. Also potentially a fellow seer of Things. Harper believes her, too.
As if you were on fire from within. The moon lives in the lining of your skin.
A couple of social encounters. The man is charming and easy. But the stories behind his eyes tell so much more.
A year or two ahead of Harper in high school. But he works with her best friend at the paper. So it's connection by association. And rampant, on-going postulating. Does not need any of the librarian's highly invasive matchmaking. What he does at his desk is his own business. Unless it gets messy.
They met during the downtown construction fiasco, got pulled into the Dream together. Literally. Lex pulled Harper down the alley and into the Dream. There'll be a bruise. They have now formally met and Lex got Harper's best friend, Jessica, home safely from a Ladies' Night when she was thoroughly intoxicated. Their lives have tangled in some bizarre ways.

Rolled into the library and charmed the socks of the lead librarian. Respectful, self-effacing, flirtatious ex-Marine. And so flipping young! He also brought Harper one of the books Whisper asked her to retrieve. He and Easton know one another. Harper looks forward to Tyrone's library visits, as few and far between as they are.
Fellow research junkie. Library frequenter. Sometime-secret sharer. Takes care of Izzy. And the faded purple sweat pants. Recipient of the Gift of Ginger Beer. Very few can claim that. She never, never shortens his name. Harper believes him.
Harper met Alistair at Lilith's home. There was talk of whether he ought to be immolated. He was well-dressed, cleverly-spoken, and left a noteworthy first impression.
Harper was a year behind Christopher at GH High School. But between a common 'visit' to the Dream with Christopher and the fact that Harper's best friend (and journalist) recently did a story about the man, Harper will seek out conversation if their paths cross again. Let's just keep fingers crossed that there are no more boxes of malevolent bones the next time.
Owns a local bookstore. Undercover local author! A couple of years younger than Harper, but she makes sure they keep in touch. She might even be a bit delighted to know not only an author, but one from Gray Harbor, in Gray Harbor. His secret is not hers to tell. And she's quite marvelous at keeping secrets. The library may be her home away from home and her unofficial spouse, but every now and then wandering through a bookstore is a little slice of heaven.
The part-owner of Sweet Retreat down on the boardwalk stopped by with a proposition for a jelly bean count competition at his place of business. When he told Harper about the intention to raise money for the library and to give out books an ice cream as prizes, he quickly earned himself a new friend. Now he is required to be the new teddy bear for kids to crawl all over during Story Time at the library, regularly. Rumor has it that the pair broke up after a summer fling.
Fellow classmate and local. Victim of late-night, extra-dark chocolate visits. She may smack talk Harper's fictional boyfriend, but she knows her Dumas well enough to be forgiven. Accused by Harper of evoking ambiance. Pity the soul who falls for this dangerous girl.
They met when he was in middle school and she was in high school. Library buddies. Now he's a bitter, sarcastic EMT who works far too much for his own good. Regular recipient of banana bread and books. Accused savior-complex. Very strange friend-Uber for dates-gone-bad. They seem to enjoy volleying the sarcastic tennis ball. 'Stay together!' she's told him time and time again when it comes to horrific GH moments. Aside from a strange, drunk kiss, he's the brother she never had.
Brother of the previously met Ignacio. Harper met Raf at a clean-up gathering at Lilith's place when he showed up with Tobin. Harper approves, strongly.
A complex and intelligent woman. Harper made her acquaintance during the construction accident downtown. They went into the Dream together. Willing to commit to getting the job done. That says a lot about a person's character. Harper must make a note to invite the woman to tea, if she can figure out how to find her again.
Intense and sharp-tongued. Not at all what one would initially expect today. But Violet Knows Things, it seems. And Harper would like to learn more. Will she let herself be tracked down for some direct conversation? Harper 'met' her during the downtown construction fiasco (though Violet was also a year ahead of her at GH High School) during which a motley collection of business owners ended up in the Dream.

She seems adept at what she does, and also is close to Byron. That links the woman, whether she wants to be linked or not.
Not what Harper expected, though there was little time for preliminary expectations before they were thrown into the Dream with a motley collection of business owners downtown during the construction accident. He'll carry a box of bones. And that earns him points. He won't run away when others do. That earns him several more. What will Harper do when she can't show her appreciation by delivering her moderate-at-best food gifts?

Death’s Daughter– Her mom died in a car crash when she was five. Her best friend (Bette) died in a terrible truck-bicycle accident when they were in 3rd grade (local), and on April 1st (no joke). Her dad died in the shower on her 18th birthday. People around her, they die. Is she tragic, dangerous, or cursed?
Rabbit’s foot – Harper has little blips of luck all the time. Win $100 off a lottery ticket when it’s time to buy books for college. Find someone’s lost dog peeing on the telephone pole where the Lost notice is posted. Miss being hit by a dumptruck by >>that<< much. And that doesn’t even include her tax returns or her proclivity for carnival games.
Locally Raised, Cage Free – Harper was born in Gray Harbor. She still lives in the small bungalow home her father died in. Were you in the high school class of 2009 or close to it? You may be friendly acquaintances. She may show up randomly at your place of living with a mediocre but well-intended casserole or batch of muffins. As tipped in the head as she is, she’s usually pleasant to be around.
The In-Between – Harper doesn’t really heed social norms, especially judging others on their financial, legal, or social lots in life. And the girl can keep a secret.
Reading is Fun! – Harper is the lead librarian at the Gray Harbor public library. Need a book or some computer time? Have a research question? Want to talk Sherlock Holmes? It just might be she’s saving herself for the book character who might walk through the doors to the local library any day now. She’s his number one fan …
All that Glimmers is not gold – For those who can sense such things, there’s definitely a bit of speckly shimmer to the tipped librarian.
We’re all a little crazy, here – Since 3rd grade, Harper was known as the girl who forgot to stop having imaginary friends, much less having conversations with them in public places. She also used to be seriously into superstitions, the sillier, the better. She’s a friendly woman with a bent toward generosity. That wins most people over. But even the town gossips refer to her as ‘that poor Harper girl’ and wonder if she should be taking medication for some mental eccentricity or another. Still, she’s harmless, right? Wait. Who is she talking to /now/?
I was in the middle of saying something then I lost my … - Harper swings from direct attention to abrupt moments of utter distraction. Dependable in a pinch? Not so much, no.
Like a needle skipping across a record with a lifetime of scratches, Harper is a juxtaposition of melody and interruption. The local librarian has slender, girl-next-door looks with a liberal dose of wry self-awareness that competes with those moments when she simply seems to see (or hear) reality turned on its ear. More often than not she dresses in stereotypical librarian cardigans and has a buttoned-up yet not particularly uptight look about her. If she’s using a computer or reading a book, she’ll often wear a pair of glasses. She seems harmless enough, is friendly in a way that is seemingly unaware of societal castes, and has a ready laugh that lands nicely on the ear; these aspects of her personality seem to keep her from complete societal aspersion, especially in Gray Harbor. Nearly black hair and dark eyes balance a distracted smile, even when she’s chiding or arguing for what may be argument’s sake.
