Sometimes you set a goal to make a friend and you don't quite succeed. Julia doesn't think Finch dislikes her, but she does believe that Finch doesn't see her as someone she has a lot in common with. At least she likes Julia's cooking, and they're okay so far with working together.
Julia's parents used to pay Byron under the table to make deliveries when they were kids. Sometimes he'd play with the Velez children while waiting for orders to go deliver. Rumor has it he's back and it's a total rags to riches story. It'll be interesting to see how he's changed. She's a little afraid that he'll judge her if they do meet up, not just for her time upstate, but for the fact that she's somehow found herself stuck again in Gray Harbor.

Elise's parents own the Sea View Suites - and have forever, just like Julia's family has always owned the Fried Fish booth. So she knows Elise's parents pretty well, and now they have something in common: Julia's mother had a stroke, and so did Elise's father, and they were both prevailed upon to come home and help with their ailing, aging parents. Elise was one of the first people to make Julia feel welcome after she returned, and is the first of a growing circle of friends every 20-something has.
Actually, Erin's mother is Julia's tia, which is to say, she married up, and Erin and Julia are primas. The Addingtons are in general, rich white people, and the Velezes are...not, which can sometimes make things awkward when the families are brought together for various and sundry reasons. But Erin and Julia have always been alright by each other, and Julia is happy to go along with the rich girl fun when Erin lets her. Even if there's some social class tension floating over them, Erin is still family, and Julia is inclined to look out for her.
She remembers the boy with the funny name. He's one of the least judgemental people Julia has ever met, and she feels very comfortable in his presence. They've been getting on like peas in a pod since reuniting. Rhys makes Julia feel normal.
The first night they met, he told her that he couldn't blame her family for dumping her in the asylum and if he were them he'd want to forget she ever existed. Granted, she'd jumped down Violet's throat, but the guy went for the vital organs at the first opportunity. Violet's touting of him as kind and compassionate doesn't fit with what Julia's seen so far. On the other hand, the next guy who assumes they're related because they're both brown and speak Spanish is getting a boot up their ass.
For now, though? She'd show up at his funeral in a red dress.
Violet hasn't exactly left the best first impression on Julia, but they've agreed to wipe the slate and start over. She does believe Violet loves Alice, but she's waiting for an opportunity for Violet to put her money where her mouth is. Violet gives the impression of being timid, but she's survived this long with little help, so surely there's something there. Julia does, however, think that Violet is completely blind to the darkness inside the man she loves, and when she does, it may be too late.
Seth lives caddy-corner across the street from Julia, at 26 Elm Street.
Stephanie lives right across the street from Julia, at 30 Elm Street.
Hidden layers. The first time Julia met August she was convinced he was possessed and kinda sorta slammed him into a wall with some heavy furniture. Oops? But all has been forgiven, and Julia is greatly impressed by both his skill when it comes food as well as his warmth and the way he cares about his friends. Trust and respect has been earned rather quickly.
Graham is Elise's boyfriend. He's the bartender at the Firefly Club. He doesn't take himself too seriously, seems to genuinely adore Elise, and though Julia will never tell him, he makes an acceptable mojito. Dinners at his and Elise's house may become a regular thing, but someone else better start being responsible for the music.
A newcomer to town, Ignacio has an ease about him that makes him comfortable to be around. He has a good gauge of Julia's temper, perhaps because he grew up in a family of similar background. He's a good drinking buddy, a competent sous chef, and now he's also a part time employee at Fried Fish.
Itzhak had a tough life. He's a mechanic and a former(?) delinquent who plays violin and drops Yiddish on the regular. He and Julia share an affinity, not just for what they're able to do with their Glimmer, but the amount of it they have at their disposal. In a way he's a kindred spirit. Julia delights in making him blush, which seems far too east to for such a seemingly rough man.
Tobin has actually been in town for years, as he owns the local boat tour business. It's just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Fried Fish shack. He always sends customers over after his tours are done, and while Julia's always appreciated the customers, she's never actually gotten to know Tobin until recently. He's a nice guy, with a shine comparable to her own.
A pâtissier of considerable skill, Vyv fully understands the passion and perspective that is unique to culinary artists. He's shown appreciation for Julia's work, and the admiration is mutual. Vyv has an enormous ego, but it's exactly the sort that Julia understands, and is often the mark of those at the top of their mutual field.
Alice and Hannah took Julia under their wing when she first arrived at the asylum. Together the three of them kept each other sane in that hellhole. Alice taught Julia how to protect herself, and Julia loves her like a sister. The only thing that made it hard to leave the loony bin was leaving Alice and Hannah behind, but Alice told her in no uncertain terms to get the hell out when she could.
Hannah had been at the facility upstate for about two years by the time Julia arrived. They spent a lot of time together - along with Alice Whitehouse. Hannah and Julia learned together how to hide their abilities and seem normal, at least normal enough to get out of this place. The three of them forged a friendship that helped to keep them all grounded and sane. Julia loves Hannah like a sister. Within a few weeks of Hannah's departure, Julia turned eighteen, and got out of there, too. The two lost touch in 2013, when they left the facility.
- Semi-Local - Julia's mother and older sister Mariana have run the Fried Fish stand on the boardwalk for the past fifteen years. Julia herself was born in Gray Harbor, but she stopped attending school around the age of nine, and left town at the age of eleven.
- Sent Upstate - At the age of eleven, rumor has it, Julia was committed to a mental institution in northern Washington State.
- Restaurateur - After her mother had a stroke, Julia returned to Gray Harbor. She now helps her older sister run the fish stand and look after their mother. It turns out that Julia is actually quite the culinary talent, and the shack's weekly specials are surprisingly elevated.
- Hard to Detect - Despite having an intensely strong Glimmer, most people have a difficult time detecting when she uses her abilities. Some people assume she doesn't use them at all.
- Stereotypical - Maybe a little bit. A Latina with a temper, though more often than not when people think her temper's flaring, she's pretty calm. And then they tell her to calm down, and that's when the earrings come off.
Perhaps she isn't a striking, awe-inspiring beauty, but there's no denying that Julia is an attractive woman, dusky and possessive of a certain dark allure. She stands right at 5'7" tall, her build slender but still shapely, with curves in just the right places, well-suited to her dusky skin-tone, brown hair, and dark brown eyes. Light waves give her hair just a touch of body, though she often pulls it back from her face into a quick ponytail, leaving only a few strands to soften her features. Those eyes of hers are large and slightly tilted, framed by thick lashes and set beneath shapely brows, accented by subtle but minimal cosmetics.
