This little adventurer means a whole lot to me. Never thought of myself as a dad type, but I'm gonna do my best.
Dad Does Best, Succeeds By Skin of His Teeth
Dad does his best, and always has, but he's had a hard life. He's always worked two to four jobs, all entry level, but it's been enough to get me everything I needed. Maybe not everything I wanted, but everything I needed, and as far as I can tell, that's the definition of a good father.
She wasn't so bad, but her brother David was a douche canoe of the first degree in school. Now he's on the city council. Joy.
Red-String Set: Kevin loves all sorts of conspiracy theories, anything that it seems like people are trying to keep hidden. Some of them are clearly ridiculous (Finland doesn't exist? Really?), but he's willing to listen to any of them, and believe more than most.
First Initial: Kevin is his middle name, and he is utterly ashamed of his first name (Clarence).
Inquisitive: Even when it's not a grand conspiracy theory, Kevin loves to know what's really going on, to get a peek behind the curtain, to fit all the pieces together. This means he sticks his nose in where it doesn't belong from time to time.
Buff Nerd: As a geeky writer/reporter/conspiracy theorist, Kevin might be expected to be pasty and wiry-at-best. Well, he's pasty, but he also spends a bunch of time at the gym since getting pushed around too much in high school.
Clarence Kevin Walters had a lonely childhood. His father, Burt, was an odd-jobs guy, taking work wherever he could, and his mother, Emmaline, decided to R-U-N-N-O-F-T when he was only two. This left Kevin (never, ever, ever Clarence in his memory, it must have been something from his mother) living mostly at home, with his father busy going from job to job, trying to make ends meet. Kevin was a quiet child, retreating into his own worlds and communities -- fantasy, sci-fi, and the Internet. He played games, watched movies, talked to people, and saw the most outlandish theories.
Kevin's father finally got fed up with the kid constantly curled around his laptop, and declared that Kevin had to join a sport in middle school. Kevin looked at the available sports and decided that cross country was the least offensive. By high school, he was technically a varsity letterman in cross country, but mostly it was just something that happened between RPG campaigns, MMO raids, and message board discussions about what was really going on in the world. He joined the school newspaper because he wanted to expose the corrupt underbelly of the school -- only to discover that no one would print what he found. His frustration continued in college (Washington State University - Vancouver campus), but finally he got several pieces printed, first by writing benign pieces to prove his chops, and then working on pieces that he was interested in -- ones he thought actually mattered. It was in college that he also reinvented himself, trying to rebrand himself from 'picked-upon nerd' to 'mouthy firebrand.' He graduated with a degree in journalism, and immediately moved to the big city (Seattle) to make a difference.
He spent 4 years in Seattle, working as a stringer for the Seattle Times and writing blogs and even doing a little advertising copywriting. He pushed a little too hard for one of his pieces, however, and made himself persona non grata in the Seattle journalism scene (and getting his nose broken once while chasing a story a little too close). So he packed up his apartment and moved down to Vancouver, getting a job at a paper there -- for another 4 years. Now he's been forced back to Gray Harbor, and has taken up a job at the Gazette, moving back in with his Dad while he gets enough money to get his own place.
Returning to Gray Harbor had other side effects also, as he realized that when his nose wasn't totally stuck in a book or a computer, there were people in Gray Harbor who... shone. Even he's not quite sure how it happened first, but somehow, he could feel when others were upset, or excited, or scared. It let him tailor his questions to exploit those emotions to find what they were hiding. And holy crap, did he throw dice at that stupid munchkin asshole in his gaming group? Well, he knew there were stories about Men Who Stare At Goats and government projects to unlock psychic abilities -- could they be real?
This Caucasian man stands a touch taller than average, about six feet, and sports a pair of sloping shoulders that headline a body that looks rather unassuming in general. His face is long, topped by shaggy brown hair with the faintest of waves to it. He has a long jaw mostly hidden by a short beard, a straight nose with just a hint of a crook in the middle, maybe where it was broken once before, and a high forehead. Blue eyes are hidden behind a pair of glasses with round, black rims. His skin is just on the healthy side of pasty, suggesting either a lot of time spent indoors or northern European descent and a lifetime in the Pacific Northwest.
