My brother. Most of what I've done was for him, but I wouldn't change it.

We keep running into each other in places with food. Maybe that says something, but I don't know what.

Met her in Spokane -- didn't expect to see her here, but it's not a bad thing.

Another nurse at Addington. Definitely want to stay on her good side so she doesn't bust out her Sad Face.

I knew her from somewhere she'd rather forget, but at least she doesn't hold it against me. It's good to see her doing well.

Eduardo was eight when his younger brother Matias was born. Up until then, he’d had a pretty normal childhood. His parents were immigrants from Mexico, and while they didn’t have a lot, they had about the same as everyone else around them. In school, he was never at the top of the class, but he did all right. He had plenty of friends but he was never the most popular. All in all, pretty normal. …Well, except when he started what can only be described as ‘feeling other people’s feelings’ after a particularly bad bout of the flu when he was about ten. It was subtle, and he didn’t really try to figure it out, but he just seemed to understand people better than others did.

Lalo’s brother Matias seemed normal, too, at first. He was just a little bit slower than most other kids, but nothing to write home about — he eventually caught up with everything, it just took him more time. He was so much younger that he felt more like a nephew than a brother to Lalo, but he looked up to him and followed him around like a baby duck.

This lasted until Matias was around seven. He entered the first grade after an extra year in kindergarten, and then he started acting out. Throughout the year, the behaviors escalated: outbursts in class, crippling anxiety when separating from his parents or especially his brother, extreme moodiness. He had no friends — instead, he would constantly try and run out of school to find Lalo, who by then was in high school. 504 plans and IEPs came and went, but finally the school said that they couldn’t accommodate Matias anymore.

His parents tried everything. Therapies, medications, outpatient treatments of various kinds, and even some inpatient treatments when Matias’ episodes became violent. Lalo, meanwhile, was still his brother’s only real solace, the only person who had a connection with him in any way. He became less of an idol and more of Matias’ caretaker; the strange ability that had manifested when he was young seemed to be why he was able to calm Matias when no one else could, simply by being calm himself. By the time his parents heard about an inpatient facility somewhere in Washington that took on particularly difficult cases, Lalo had graduated from high school and had almost finished his nursing degree, because he found that taking care of his brother was one of the only things that had ever made him feel fulfilled. Thus, when Matias left for that very facility, Lalo went too, having managed to land a job there as a nurse.

Whatever happened in the years between when they arrived at the Asylum and when Matias signed himself out at 18, Lalo doesn't talk about it. His brother certainly wasn't 'cured,' as evidenced by the fact that he was back in another psych ward only six months later. Lalo got a job somewhere else, though, and then another place, until he managed to land himself one at Addington Memorial. His brother landed there, too, though as a patient.

The fact that there happen to be several other people living in Grey Harbor who were in the facility as well is surely a coincidence. It's certainly not because he's trying to find out more about what, exactly, was happening in the Asylum -- and why.

This man is on the tall side of average, probably around six feet. His head is generally shaved, though when some hair starts to be visible, it's black. He has dark brown eyes, and usually has some scruff going on on his face, though not usually enough to be called a beard. He's either found in scrubs, or jeans and T-shirts.
