New(ish) in town: Una rocked up in December 2021, but her family has long been associated with Gray Harbor; some might remember Cassandra Irving (b1940) who died over the summer of 2021, or maybe her daughter Lara (b1978) who left town right after graduation (class of 1996).
Eternal summer: Have you seen those three houses on Oak Avenue? The ones where it always looks like a perfect, Disney-esque summer? Una's is one of those, inherited from her grandmother.
Have a cookie: Una bakes. Heard about the choux geoducks? The ombre cake? The endless cookies? Don't get her started.
Clinic support: Una works in Dr Ava Brennon's clinic, in the Bauer Building.
For as long as Una can remember, it's just been her and her mom; partners-in-crime, her mom, Lara, always said, and as a kid, Una loved that. Other kids had dads and grandparents and aunts and uncles, but Una didn't particularly feel the lack… not most of the time, anyway, because mom was there, and even if there wasn't much money, mom was, well, mom.
According to mom, her parents were 'long gone' and she didn't have any siblings, and Una's dad just hadn't stuck around. And Una believed that - because it's not like there was any evidence to the contrary. And that was fine, too.
Lara worked for the grocery, and she worked long hours, struggling to put money aside to give her daughter a good start in life: Una wasn't going to work check-out at QFC. Una was going to finish high school, and the loans would be awful, but she was going to go to college, too, if there was any possible way to do it.
So Una studied hard and become largely self-sufficient. She wasn't valedictorian when she finished high school, but it was a close-run thing, and it was enough to get scholarship money that made college a reality: in the fall of 2015, Una would join the freshman class at the University of Washington.
At least… that was the plan.
Over the summer, Una took a job at a nearby 7-11 (as much as she loved her mom, there was no way in hell she wanted to spend the summer working with her). It was still only early July when, on a late-night shift, she was caught off-guard by a man with a gun and a determined wish to empty her register. She'd been trained for this; she should have known what to do.
Instead, something in Una's head snapped.
It wasn't - precisely - that she blacked out after that, the the chain of events definitely got fuzzier. The important thing is that instead of cowering from a man with a gun, Una found herself cowering from a man who was suddenly bleeding, and who stared at her, terrified, for a moment-- before running away.
It's no surprise that Una fell apart after that. Whatever had happened, she had a sneaking suspicion that it was something to do with her… and something was different, now. The world felt different. People felt different.
And her mom… started to act really strangely.
For the first time in Una's life, there was something they couldn't talk about-- because her mom wouldn't let her. Every time she tried to explain what was going on, her mom shut her down, or told her she was imagining things.
But Una wasn't. And more than that… she could feel it in her mom, too. Not in the neighbours, not in her best friend from high school… but definitely in her mom.
That summer became a stand-off, because whatever it was that was going on inside of Una, she wanted to know what it was-- and no one seemed able to tell her anything. She quit her job at the 7-Eleven (there was no way she was going back there), and when semester started, she simply didn't show. For the first time in her life, she and her mom were constantly at odds-- and by October, they simply weren't talking at all.
Una got a job in a thrift shop, and moved out into a dilapidated old house with five others; the only kind of Seattle real estate she could afford. Six years passed, and all she could say for her achievements was that at least she'd not ended up a single mom like her own mother; otherwise, at twenty-four, she didn't have much going for it.
And she still had no idea what that… thing was, in her head. The thing that let her hurt things (herself, even, on one or two memorable occasions), and sometimes heal them too (but not herself; that never worked).
It was October of 2021 when things changed. A letter arrived in the mail: formal, on thick paper, with a letter-head and everything.
Its contents changed her life: she, Una Magnolia Irving, was the sole heir of one Cassandra Montgomery Irving… and owned a house, and associated contents, in Grey Harbor, Washington.
This letter resulted in yet another argument between mother and daughter, and finally, an admission: Cassandra was Lara's mom, Una's grandmother. Yes, she'd been alive all this time, until recently. And no, Lara wanted nothing to do with the estate.
It was curiosity - and perhaps a small amount of desperation, her bills continuing to mount up and her prospects dwindling - that drove Una to Grey Harbor. At worst, she could just sell the house and move on. At best… maybe there were some answers out there. Maybe things would eventually start to make sense.
Una's plump more than curvy by most estimations, though despite a shy demeanour she seems reasonably comfortable in her own skin: short and baby-faced, with a certain amount of off-beat style, and a smile that is rarely less than warm. She's fair skinned, all the better to highlight frequent blushes, with an expressive face marked by dark brown eyes and chubby cheeks. Her hair's caught between the intersection of red and brown, bright and glossy and so-often worn loose about her shoulders, not quite straight but far from curly.
