*Family Funeral Director - Beth Lawson's family has ran the Lawson Funeral Home for as long as anyone can remember. If you have dead in the city chances are one of the Lawsons was involved in the funeral and burial.
*Townie-Beth Lawson has lived most of her life in Gray Harbor, and only really left briefly to go to college.
The Lawsons have been the Undertakers in Gray Harbor for as long as anyone can remember. Most residents of the town are familiar with three generations of undertakers: Rick Sr who is in his eighties and retired, his son Rick Jr who is in his sixties and now stepping into a supporting role so he can assist the newest Undertaker his daughter Beth. Death was as normal as living for Beth, her older sister Angela, and younger brother Ricky growing up. They played amongst the coffin displays and were often exposed to dead bodies. Despite this the Lawson children were well-adjusted and liked in elementary school.
However, sometimes Beth wonders if their upbringing had an effect on her other siblings. Angela left Gray Harbor the first chance she got. She lives in Florida now and seems content in her sunnier surroundings. Ricky was not so lucky. He moved to Seattle, got addicted to heroin, and died from an overdose.
Beth has always been very in tune with the emotions of others. Death and the dead doesn't frighten her the way it does others, but she has always acutely understood the pain the bereaved feel. Even as a child she used this ability to reassure those suffering from grief. Still, her brother's death touched her in a way death hadn't before. It's been over a decade since Ricky died, but she still remembers the pain. Knowing how it felt to lose her brother made Beth realize how important her work is. It was during this time she realized that she could help the suffering for a little bit. She doesn't know how she does it, but she knows she can briefly calm the distraught and give them the strength to endure their loss just long enough to get through the funeral. It doesn't take the pain away completely, but sometimes it's nice to give someone something when they've lost so much.
Beth's parents have recently turned over management of the funeral home to her. They moved into a smaller apartment, and now Beth lives alone in the funeral home. Her father assists her part-time, but when death happens in Gray Harbor it is generally Beth Lawson who lays the departed to rest.
Beth is in her early to mid thirties. She is tall, with slightly broad shoulders and an hourglass figure that gives her a strong but feminine look. Her hair is black, contains the slightest amount of wave, and stops at mid-back. She has almond shaped green eyes that are framed by arched black brows. Her nose is straight, long, and slightly downturned. When she smiles it accentuates the dimples in her cheeks. When she is performing her duties as funeral home director she wears somber pantsuits and jacket skirt combos, conservative makeup, low sensible pumps paired with hosiery, and her hair is kept in neat twists or braids. Outside of work she prefers trendy but comfortable layered clothes in soft colors, blow-outs or braids, and cat-eye eyeliner. No matter her clothing choices she always wears black-rimmed glasses.
