Ma. Still at Huckleberry, just with more room in the trailer since we grew up and moved out. Still has the worst taste in boyfriends, which makes a guy kinda worry now and then how bad his dad must be if she dates those dudes in public but won't cop to that one. Deserves better than she gets from life, though. She's a tough lady and smarter than she thinks. Weird the things you have to go away a while to figure out. Or maybe that's just not being a shithead teenager. Gotta be some benefit to becoming a shithead adult!
Tadcu. Mom's dad. Used to work at the sawmill, lost a finger to it before I was born. Doesn't talk a lot unless he gets in the mood, but he's got great stories when he does. I think he's a little disappointed I didn't take up building furniture from him, but I couldn't ever do it as good. Taught me to shoot when I was tiny, though, and we still do that. He and Mamgu are still in the house on Elm and the only change since I was little is the trees are bigger and it keeps getting more built-ins...
Mamgu. Mom's mam. Worked in the office at the high school until she retired a few years back, which is a good situation for when you forget lunch money but kind of a crap one when you get detention. You know. If either of those are the kind of thing high-school-you happens to do. Kinda often. Also makes ditching inconvenient. Nothing like getting a disappointed lecture in a language you only half understand! Really into scrapbooking since she retired. And way more complicated baking than when I was little.
The House Always Wins: Oversees a good portion of the operations of the Grand Olympic Casino, so can often be found there.
Ace of Clubs: Still also oversees the day-to-day operations of the Firefly Club -- inventory, scheduling, accounting, all the various keep-things-going stuff -- but leaves a good deal more of it to the assistant managers now that he's more often at the casino.
Follow the Money: BA in Business Administration; finished his Masters and passed the CPA exam last year. Sure, accounting might not be the sexiest specialty, but he's good at it. You're not trying to hide anything from Felix in your books, right?
Class of 2012: He went to Teddy S. Addington High here in town -- and the middle and elementary schools before that. Smart kid, friendly, high-spirited, bit of a troublemaker but remarkably good at talking his way out of the consequences. Except periodic fights, which he rarely backed down from but also rarely won. Maybe you knew each other?
All He Can Be: Joined the Army out of high school. But he's back now! Hooray! (Maybe hooray.)
Number One with a Bullet: Guns are fun. There's gotta be a range around here somewhere, right? He's probably a regular. Marksmanship's one of those skills you don't want to get too rusty.
Face the Music: Do you go to karaoke night? So does he. All the karaoke night. Wanna get tipsy and sing things?
Anyone looking for 'tall, dark, and handsome' is going to be disappointed. First of all, if Rhys hits 5'6", it's only because he's wearing shoes and his hair's got body. And secondly, the hair in question is auburn, matched with fair skin and decidedly blue eyes. On the last count... well, that one's closer, at least. He's got good cheekbones, a strong jaw, an aquiline nose; it's an expressive face, particularly with the fairly emphatic eyebrows, and well put together. When he's clean-shaven, people have been known to question his legality to drink in a club, much less run one, so his facial hair usually falls somewhere along the continuum from 'business scruff' to 'scale-model lumberjack', depending on his schedule and whims.
His sartorial style, too, depends largely on schedule and whim. One day he might be in t-shirt, flannel, and jeans, and the next in a tailored suit. Whatever he chooses, he moves fluidly and carries himself with a kind of self-assurance that makes it strangely easy to forget how small he actually is. Until he's standing next to a decent point of comparison, anyway. That tends to bring it back to mind.
