Archivist - No, she's not that Archivist. Anne is the Gray Harbor City Archivist and works in City Hall. It's an elected position, but, well, there weren't exactly a lot of people gunning for it. If you want historical documents or city records, she's your girl, so long as you fill out the proper paperwork in triplicate and submit yourself to the whims of city bureaucracy.
The Other Archivist - Yes that Archivist. Anne wouldn't say she's on a first name basis (really, who is?) but she's been known to skulk around the Veil City Hall. Need someone to help you navigate the Other Departments Department? Anne's a good person to know.
Very Part-Time Librarian - Let's face it, city government employees get a lot of time off. Anne amuses herself as the part-time librarian at the Gray Harbor Library. She works some weekend shifts (Friday thru Sunday) with a random Tuesday thrown in there.
Local Historian - Anne knows a lot about Gray Harbor. It's sort of an obsession. But she's also a huge other history buff. Her main focus is early modern period & long 19th century (late 1400s through the early 1900s).
Smeagol & Gollum - Those would be her adorable Corgi pups.
If there’s anything that’s been a constant in Anne’s life, it’s Gray Harbor. Born to Sam Washburn Mary Washburn nee Wilmer, Anne was born and raised here along with her older brothers. And just as Gray Harbor has been a constant in Anne’s life, the Washburns have been a constant in Gray Harbor’s - a local family that could trace their roots back to the town’s initial establishment, the Washburns were always quite solidly middle class. They were known as people who never made much of fuss, typically stayed out of everyone’s business, and just lived their own lives, occasionally acting in positions that would allow them to be mediators or other neutral third-party sorts.
But the solid reputation of the Washburns became quite rocky when Anne’s youngest brother turned thirteen. Something in him simply snapped; Anne was too young to remember all the details, but the chaos that followed upended an otherwise idyllic childhood. Anne’s parents argued constantly over what to do with Tommy, and it resulted in divorce. Her mother moved away, back home to her parents on the east coast, and took Tommy with her, claiming he needed special doctors and a special school and that she had too much on her plate taking care of Tommy that she wouldn’t be able to take Anne and her older brother, George. Her father withdrew, George turned resentful and angry, and Anne fell into her books to find something of an escape. George left Gray Harbor the second he turned eighteen, after suffering through a year or so of depression and what the doctors described as anxiety-driven delusions.
In spite of the upheaval, Anne soldiered on. A good student, she had a love for history and literature and excelled in those subjects. It was no surprise when she got a scholarship to UW Seattle, though it took some gentle provoking from a guidance counselor for Anne to agree to leave Gray Harbor, if only for those four years. It was in the summer just before college that Anne’s Glimmer manifested - her father, sleep deprived and maybe a little drunk, ran his car into a tree while they were headed to Hoaquim for school supplies. Anne hit her head on the dash and, dazed and disoriented, staggered out into the nearby woods where she swears to this day that she found a door in a tree that led to an upside down version of Gray Harbor. It was something of an Alice-In-Wonderland experience; she stumbled all the way through to some backwards version of City Hall, where a man with a dog’s head said he was the Veil police and chased her off, trying to bite her. She learned later that she’d inadvertently found a thin point, created a door, and stumbled into the Veil. It was by sheer luck that she found her way back again.
But by the time she returned, it was a week later and her father had left Gray Harbor, too. But he left it by way of the grave, having died instantly during the car crash.
Anne probably should’ve left Gray Harbor behind, too, and she did for awhile. Up in Seattle, she obtained a Masters in Library Science with a minor in history. But she didn’t feel the same in Seattle; it always felt like something was missing, like there was a piece of her that she couldn’t quite access. So every semester break, every summer, she returned like a moth to the flame, and soaked up the weirdness that was Gray Harbor, fascinated by the city itself, as well as the upside-down city within.
When she graduated, Anne took a job as the high school librarian while devoting her free time to researching Gray Harbor and the Veil. She wanted to know why Gray Harbor was the way it was; why was it a thin point, what did that mean? Through her research, she came face-to-face with the Archivist in Veil City Hall, along with several other departments (she lost nearly a week when she made a wrong turn in the Other Departments Department). Gray Harbor was - became - the constant in her life when nothing else stayed.
Five years ago, the City Hall archivist died at his desk and the position came up for election. Anne was the only one who applied - who actually wants to be a City Archivist anyway? - and therefore won by default. Her position gives her access to historical records and data that most other people obsessed with local history could only dream of having, and she takes quite a bit of pride in her job. Even if she has an exceptional amount of time off - government jobs, man. She doesn’t date much, but she has two great dogs - twin Corgis named Smeagol and Gollum. And of course she has Gray Harbor and all its weirdness, the one thing that hasn’t left her yet.
At five feet and three inches in height with a slender, subtly curved build and fair skin, Anne is more ‘cute’ than strikingly beautiful. Her eyes are by far her best feature, a clear bright blue in color and framed with naturally long lashes. Her cheekbones are high and rounded and her nose a bit narrow, she has a cupid’s bow mouth with a bottom lip far fuller than the top. Whenever she smiles, the dimples come out, lending to that adorable sort of look to her. Light golden brown hair falls in wavy curls just past her shoulders, often left loose despite the annoyance of having to constantly push the hair behind her ears. More often than not, on her ears are a pair of basse taille enamel flower earrings, with sky blue fading to pink petals, an an old-cut diamond in the centre and eight-cut diamonds set in along the petal edges.
