So, I feel like possibly I should make a few things explicit:
RL, psych meds are pretty amazing things, and there's a stigma against them that really shouldn't be. As with many other kinds of illness, sometimes it takes a while to find the right medication for a given person, but for many people proper medication can make the difference between function and dysfunction, or even life and death. Any implication otherwise from the character is purely the character. And really, does Aidan seem like the best reference for important life choices?
Aidan does fairly well at taking his mood stabilizers, even if he usually skips the antipsychotics. Most of the time it's hard to distinguish his psychosis from what's just actual reality for someone who really is telepathic, pyrokinetic, haunted, etc., even before Dreams enter into it. Which is sort of the point. He's learnt to be careful who he tells things, and how to be passably functional, as long as the stabilizers are working. When/if things break down, that's a different story.
Most of the ways Aidan may be a bit odd day-to-day are just Aidan. Anything I seem to be playing for laughs is probably in that category!

The Roof Is On Fire: Those who lived around the area and were old enough to remember things in 1997 or so might remember the Kinney house burning down one night, with their adopted toddler the only survivor, whisked off by the authorities. Probably to relatives or something? No one's seen him since, anyway. Well, not until now...
That Haunted Look: The ghost won't tell him why, but it's been there as long as he can remember. And it hates him. Won't tell him why on that, either. Asshole.
It's Magic!: At the moment his main 'job' is doing magic on the boardwalk for tips. He's not bad, though it's probably more impressive to, you know, not-actual-psychics.
A Guy's Gotta Eat: His regular income is minimal and the supplements are iffy. Got something that needs doing? He might do it.
Slightly-Less-Mobile Home: He's calling #42 at the Huckleberry Mobile Home Park home at the moment. Beats living in his van! Fellow denizen, or passing through? Might run into him.
The Boy Ain't Right: Most days it's fairly subtle. Some days, it really isn't. Subtle days probably fit in well enough in a town full of Glimmer, at least...
The Once and Future(?) Mental Patient: He's spent some time institutionalized — his later teen years on the east coast, and a few much shorter periods since on this one. Could be some overlap with others who might've been at the same hospitals in one way or another.
Clothesunicorn: For a guy who doesn't otherwise own much, he's got an awful lot of clothes. Sometimes strange clothes.
What Aidan knows for certain is that he was born in Addington Memorial Hospital, on April 1st of 1993, to... someone. A woman, presumably. Or maybe more likely a girl. It was a closed adoption, and on his official (amended) birth certificate, it lists the Kinneys as his parents. He doesn't really know if she was local, but they were — right up until that night and the house burnt down. Somehow, three-year-old Aidan toddled out of it all unscathed. He was the only one.
No one knows for sure how the fire started. He worries, some nights, that it was him. He was six, the first time he knows he did it — but he doesn't actually remember anything at all before he was five or so, so he really can't be sure. It was musical foster homes from then on, as they got sick of him skipping school and shoplifting and fighting and otherwise generally causing trouble, until he got caught going on a shopping spree halfway down the coast on someone else's credit card. In his defense, he did buy a lot of gifts for people. And who lets a fourteen year old use a credit card without even asking questions, anyway? It didn't help when they found out about a couple of the little fires — a dumpster here, an abandoned car there -- as well.
'Schizoaffective Disorder, Bipolar Type.' That was the official diagnosis. Hallucinations, delusions, manic episodes. Uncontrolled enough that he was sentenced to hospitalization rather than incarceration, which is where he stayed until he turned 18 and was deemed both stable and rehabilitated enough to release back into the world, with a GED, a sealed criminal record, a referral to DHS, and a handful of prescriptions. He filled them reliably. He just didn't take them all.
The problem is, it's not easy to truly convince someone the things he experiences aren't real when he has objective proof some of the ones you deny indeed are. Some of the voices he heard seemed pretty accurate about what people were thinking and feeling. He really could make them really understand how he felt. He really could set things on fire with his mind. And there really was a ghost that wouldn't leave him the hell alone. Okay, the anti-psychotics did quiet the ghost down a lot, but they quieted everything down. Too far down. Skipping those pills was how he got into sleight of hand to begin with. Now that he was out, magic became a means of slightly-more-support, and he fell in with an artistic crowd that tended to appreciate and encourage eccentricities. It led to several years doing general tech work for a theatre group — lighting, sound, costumes, scenery — and he went along with them when they lost their physical theatre and decided to just go tour, as well.
Couldn't last forever, though; interpersonal drama ended up breaking things apart eventually, and Aidan ended up spending a shorter stay in a different hospital, then heading out alone again. He was always pretty good at being liked, so it wasn't alone that long; he made all kinds of friends as he drifted up the West Coast, surfing from couch to couch or living in his van. Busking and a return to his old larcenous ways kept food in his belly and gas in his tank, aided by odder jobs and a complete willingness to get by on good looks and charm, if that's what'd get him by. California was fun, all the way up; Eugene was great until he got manic enough to not-quite-literally burn his local bridges before some inpatient time adjusting the meds. Portland, then, which held a strange attraction, particularly those tunnels, and kept him well over a year before a bad break-up and a strange dream drove him north again, this time toward the place he first began. In search of answers. And possibly some questions, too.
He's got beautiful hair -- a tousled mop of loose, shiny, very deep brown curls, thick and silky, tinged with a deep red when the light hits them. They're just long enough to occasionally get in the way of his intelligent, clear hazel eyes, set off by dark lashes and emphatic eyebrows and harmonizing with his tawny complexion. Overall, his features are pleasing; almost pretty, but pulled back by a certain strength and angularity that balances the large eyes and full lips, and by the fact that even on the days he doesn't wear a short, close-trimmed beard, his face flatly refuses to look entirely clean-shaven. The body's not too bad either -- slim enough that even when he slouches he still looks his full 6'2", but it's a wiry, fit sort of slenderness.
He's clad in faded, slightly frayed blue jeans beneath an untucked white t-shirt that says "WWJD" in big letters across the chest, slightly smaller ones beneath it adding, "For a Klondike Bar?" Over that, he's got an unbuttoned, seriously loud Hawaiian shirt, intensely red with a wide selection of hibiscus blossoms, palm trees, and hula girls scattered across it. Regulation black Docs under those frayed jean cuffs; a seemingly random collection of bracelets and watch, all on one wrist; and an ebony plug about the size of a pinky tip in each earlobe. Against the cold, he's added a white hoodie in polar fleece, the hood of which is decorated with a bear face, complete with little round ears and black plastic eyes and nose. Over the rest is a well-worn biker jacket of the traditional sort, all fairly closely fit black leather and silvery zippers and snaps.
