Another Addington - They're like weeds in Gray Harbor, popping up all over the place. Katy is the daughter of George Addington, who hasn't shown his face in Gray Harbor since high school. She was raised back east, but she has made an effort to get to know the rest of her family, spending summers and holidays in Gray Harbor since she was fifteen.
Web Design - That's how she pays the bills. She does websites for the Historical Society, City Hall, Addington House, and others. She almost definitely got a few of these contracts 'cause of the family name, but oh well. Sue them if you have a problem with it.
Historical Society Member - Despite being a recent transplant to Gray Harbor, she immediately joined the local historical society. Partially, this is because she maintains their website, but also it's because the history of this weird town is fascinating to her.
Glimmer Neophyte - Go easy. She hasn't learned a whole lot about her abilities, despite having had them since she was fifteen. Being raised away from all this bizarre stuff has left her out of the loop in a lot of ways.
Tiny Dancer - Little known fact about Katy is that she used to be a dancer. She doesn't talk much about why she quit, but it happened before she started visiting Gray Harbor. She's taking lessons again though, and maybe you might have run into her at Dance Evolution.
Like many an Addington before him and many that would follow, Katy’s father – George Addington – left Gray Harbor as soon as he was able. Unlike so many of his relatives, he didn’t have that “specialness,” but he was peripherally aware that whatever it was? It ran in his family, and Gray Harbor was somehow to blame for it. So, when it came time for college, he went back east, determined to stay away from this awful town. As a college sophomore at MIT, studying what was then the still fledgling field of Computer Science, he met and fell in love with Yvonne Foster. Within a year of meeting, they had a child together – Katherine, called “Katy.” She was two years old when they divorced.
For most of her childhood, Katy’s father and the whole family that he represented were absentee. The Addington family name meant she was appropriately cared for – child support checks came on time, ever time – but it didn’t really MATTER to her during her childhood. She was a quick, bright, pleasant child growing up with her mother and stepfather in the suburbs of D.C. Her mom is a political activist that represents several environmental firms, and her stepfather owns a successful landscaping company. Suffice it to say, she wanted for little as a child. Except, perhaps, a sense of BELONGING.
Although her mother and stepfather were actually pretty damn fine parents, they couldn’t overwrite the feeling that Katy was missing out on a crucial piece of her own identity. She spoke to her father on the phone a few times a year, but he was constantly on-the-go and had little time for her, honestly. He also wound up with three other kids by three other women, so Katy has three half-siblings on the Addington side, and the two kids her mom has with her stepfather. A lot of half-siblings, no full-blooded ones.
When she was fifteen, Katy was struggling with typical teenage emotions and hormones, PLUS the sense that she was halfway between two families but not completely part of others. And that’s when she first felt the world shift in a way she couldn’t fully explain. She was trying to study, trying to ignore the sounds of her half-siblings and her parents outside the open window, getting aggravated by their joy, wishing they would just SHUT UP, and the window of her bedroom slammed shut seemingly on its own, shattering the glass panes. Over the next few days, more things happened. Katy could “feel” her parents worry seeping in.
Reeling, somehow afraid to tell her mother, Katy swallowed her fear and her pride and called her dad. He listened quietly, then gave her the telephone number for her Aunt Margaret in Gray Harbor, saying she could explain what was happening. And she did. The story was far-fetched, but it was also so believable.
That was the first summer that Katy came to Gray Harbor. It was the first time she really understood what it was to be an Addington. And she liked it. She had a sense of being a part of something bigger and more important. Through the rest of high school and college, Katy made it a point to come back to Gray Harbor on holidays and vacations. The town was weird, but it was a sort of weird that felt like home to her. She never became especially close with Margaret or her brother Thomas, but she was welcomed into the Addington fold by the family.
After college, having followed in the footsteps of a father she still didn’t know very well into the IT field, Katy spent a few years back in D.C., working with a handful of technology companies, doing web design, all that fun stuff. It was always on her agenda to relocate to Gray Harbor permanently, but the stars didn't quite align to allow her to do so until she had worked enough to make a name for herself and gather a decent clientele.
She's finally reached the point in her career that she can support herself as an independent web designer, and she's already picked up a few contracts in Gray Harbor. The Historical Society. City Hall. Addington House. Like all good Addingtons, Katy's not afraid to let nepotism pay the bills. It leaves her free to pursue her interests in sorting through family history, figuring out who else in the Addington tree is "shiny" like she is.
More "cute" than "gorgeous," Katy has probably called the girl-next-door more times in her life than she'd care to count. Hair that would be brown if it wasn't dyed light blonde reaches the middle of her back when it's loose, but she has a tendency to keep it well-coiffed - so if it is loose? It's fashionably loose. She's an attractive woman in her mid-twenties, curvy rather than slender and short of stature. Quick, intelligent blue eyes are usually highlighted by conscientious application of cosmetics, most of which seems employed in an effort to give her a more mature look. It's a safe bet that this little fashion plate is well-dressed to match.
