We are standing on the edge.
He boosted and spotted me the first time I swung the monkey bars. He was the first one to hold my hand, my first kiss, my closest friend. He didn't care that I was poor. He pretended not to notice my dad was drunk more than he was sober. He took me everywhere and made spaces where I could fit with the other boys. He wasn't everyone else.
But just like everyone else, I shut him out.
I could have told him about what was changing me. I should have. Sometimes I wonder what would have shifted then, how different things would be now. But spilled milk retrospect is slippery. I'll clean up. He'll pour a new glass. That's how we work.
At least, that's how we used to work. Since my return, we've been through so much together. I'm not sure how we ever worked without each other for so long. Byron's love is rare and it's mine twice over-- he's my then and now.
Now I just have to trust life not to rip that apart.
Hank was always a bad loan and Felix is a smart guy. I have my suspicions about how things got this far, but does it matter? Now that he knows I'm valuable, I don't think I'm stupid enough to believe this ends after the debt is paid. So I keep taking those envelopes of good fake cash to put into circulation, I fence those stolen items, and I try to pretend he doesn't know why my profit margins are so much higher than they should be from turning trash into treasure. If it's to his benefit, does he care? Or is it just a matter of time before new tasks and favors come up in the name of interest owed?
I'm not sure how it's possible to find the guy that can be ordered to whack me at any time kind of cute, but... I'm bringing Pez to the Club with every drop off from now on. Y'know. For when he gets his favorite Pez dispenser back.
It'd be cool if Russian Banana Dick would give me some pointers, but I'll bet he thinks watching me learn crime the hard way is funny. I guess I can't really blame him. It probably is funny when you put aside the morbid consequences of screwing up.
I didn't really know Isabella in school. I remember that her brother was hot, though, before he disappeared. I can't imagine how losing a twin feels, especially to something like that. I've not had a lot of adult friends over the years, either, but there's something fun and inspiring when it comes to her company. In fact, we've grown somewhat close while dealing with what life in Gray Harbor has to throw and... I like it.
She talks about being a late bloomer, but honestly, given how novel and nice it feels to trust another woman, I think I'm the late bloomer around here.
I didn't expect to like Erin, but it turns out, I do. Her confidence has grown lately, and since I've had a go at coaching her through some difficult endeavors, I'd like to take credit and call myself her necessary bad influence. But honestly, all she needed was a poke and a nudge to see how much backbone she really had, which made her ready when the floor she's always known fell out from under her. Of course, now let's hope she doesn't take her newfound independence too far in the other direction.
I'm also ready to tell her all the screwed up truths she might not realize or want, but I swear, it's only because I find myself caring about what happens to her. Isn't that part of being a friend?
I remind Carver of himself once upon a time, I think. That probably doesn't bode well for my general future, but it sure gives him a lot of insight to read, push, and help me where I need it. Why does he do it, though?
At the end of the day, maybe it doesn't matter what his motivations are so long as the results are favorable. He took the whole accidental immolation bit like a champ.
Maybe I won't ever admit it, but I need someone like him. Some people anchor you to what's normal and safe and sane. Occasionally, others have the ability to anchor you in the middle of so much strange.
He's obviously the latter. Not that we're around each other much of late. I think I miss his smart mouth, but I'm still worried he stopped showing around and talking for a reason. Pride might also be a bitch.
This guy sure knows how to make a sticking impression. I can see where the things he says or does might be off-putting or exasperating for others, and I can see why rumors about him spin. I can also see some rightful reasons that maybe just plain allow for his particular brand of crazy. We're all a little mad around here. And not all people are equipped for the blunt truthfulness he's prone to in place of social niceties.
That said, I don't find him difficult and I feel like he makes perfect sense more often than not. In fact, I think I find him pleasant company here and there. I'm uncertain what it might imply about my own state of mind, but eh. I like what I like. The honesty is refreshing, even when it comes out all strange.
We live strange lives, after all.
He looks at me like I'm a glass cannon about to explode. And him? He's ready to dodge the shrapnel. Smart guy.
But looking right back? I know why he looks at me like that. We're strongly alike on a fundamental level outside of who we actually are. Sometimes people fear what they know, not just the unknown.
I think we understand each other on a couple different levels now. It's nice to have access to someone who understands the anxiety and problems our particular ability leanings cause.
You know that distraction you go for when you're in a bad place and don't know where to put it? His charm and easy nature made that easy for a few moments in life.
Then I scared the hell out of him and insisted distance. After seeing what I was capable of, there was very little argument. He's still sweet, though, and I hope he stays that way because not enough men are.
I also hope he's smart enough to get out of here while he's young and relatively undamaged by life.
More spontaneous than I expected. Anyone who asks me to dance without the matching music is okay in my book. And I kind of like surly, all told, so his grumps and scowls aren't particularly offputting. Good to know I can make him blush to balance things out.
I never had a mother, but I liked to pretend I had one at Tobin's house. In fact, I had an adoption plan all worked out, pragmatic planning for the day ol' Daddy Hank didn't come home. I could move in, Tobin would be my new brother because he'd be the best brother. And because Byron and Tobin were already best friends, that meant on our wedding day, they'd become brothers too!
Of course, everyone knows my Dad is an everlasting cockroach. And I shot that Barbie Dreamhouse right in the foot before it had half a chance. But Tobin was still the best brother I never had.
Everyone predicted he was trouble, but I never saw him that way. Instead, he was my neighbor, my trailer park playmate, the boy with no bedtime I could run dirty and amuck with, the one that constantly pulled my hair just to make me chase him. When we were older and I changed, it seemed to be his mission to verbally grief me out of brooding, his new way of pulling my hair and waiting for the quick chase.
After he went to jail, I realized why he picked all those fights with me. He wanted Lily to come out and play again, but I hid myself away. I worried prison violence would eat him up inside, that it'd change him, and maybe it did. But the part of him that matters is still there.
I should have known better than to worry. When Dad forgot countless dinners, he always shared his.
Look, I wasn't a full time member of the Adventurer's Guild, but Kevin was always a good sport about letting me butt in while turning ten shades of red. In fact, I feel like I should apologize now, as a grown woman, for intruding on geeky boy ritual, but I'm not sorry. That shit was fun. I can't help but wonder if I can still make him blush, though. Maybe I'll test it now that I'm back. You know, for old time's sake.
I don't really know how or why Frankie tolerated me when we got to high school, but she had her own stuff too with her mom. We played sometimes as unsupervised kids and did the girl stuff the boys didn't do. Then when teen years hit and I cut out the ones so dear to me... with her, it was fine to brood in silence, or scream along to angsty music, or talk shit about others on the sly at the lunch table. I was cautious about ever being too talkative or close, though, and I appreciate the arm's length she sensed I needed.
Gina and I never really half-ass hung out until I went darkside too and we basically had the same arm's length entertainment arrangement with each other in the name of angst, eyeliner, and oddity during high school, mainly at the lunch tables. But where I brooded and sat in force shutdown for the sake of my own issues, that edgy was just the way Gina always was and the parts of me that were still soft and lonely inside secretly kind of envied that. It seemed easier that way at the time. Granted, knowing as I know now, it probably wasn't any easier at all.
Byron had business ventures, even as a kid, and I helped him enterprise, naturally, since we were around each other more often than not. When he did his deliveries for the Velez family, they had kids we could play with during the downtime and I always kind of felt sorry for little Julia. My own dreams were starting to show the spooky things she talked about with the shadows and glowing and she was just a kid. Maybe that's part of why I refused to talk like I did. Because I heard she got sent upstate and that just had to be damages on top of damages.
I wish I could be as sweet as Harper is deep down. She genuinely still seems to take delight and pleasure in helping and just being there for others, just as she was when we were younger. And to keep that particular way about yourself as an adult that's grown up in Gray Harbor? That's a special kind of thing.
Okay, so. I'm not saying I have a crush on a Kelly brother or anything, but if this one breaks out the angry ballet training at any time in front of me, I might jump his hamfisted bones on principle. There's something fun and comfortable about the old trailer park in adult form. I mostly try to forget that he might be ordered to rough me up with those hamfists if I fuck up with Felix. That'd be one hell of an awkward moment.
I'll always be grateful for the appearance of this driven, spunky and clever girl at the Hanging Bridge the night everything went wrong. Something about Mags is just effortlessly easy to smile about and I need a little bit of that in my life.
Trailer Park Local - Lilith stays in an apartment above the pawn shop now, but she grew up in the local trailer park and her father still lives there. Anyone that lived/lives around there or went to school around the same time no doubt knows her.
Local Pawn Broker - Need cash fast? She can do that. Harbor Mist Pawn has been a family business for a few generations, but her father's debts and a fire almost killed it. After a ten year stint away, Lilith has returned and taken up the reins on the recently rebuilt shop, and old items tend to leave in better condition than they were originally. It's rumored she's paying her father's debts with favors to criminals, not just cash.
Up Against a Wall - The rumors of her father's debt to the local criminal syndicate are true. As such, a knock on the back door from a man coming to collect a payment, fence an item, or hand over cash to launder isn't uncommon. Occasionally, the favors are a little more complicated.
Lilith Winslow was raised in Gray Harbor by Hank Winslow, her widowed father, the man who owns and operates the local pawn. She didn't have much growing up in the trailer park, despite her dad being a business owner, his drinking and gambling arrears a long term and notorious problem. While not the best father, he wasn't a mean drunk-- he was more of a pain in her ass, and she's spent a lifetime growing up and paying for his apologies all around. Nevertheless, she seemed perfectly bright and sweet for the first fourteen years, but adolescence changed her.
From an outside perspective, it was easily explained. Teenage years are hormonal and tough, and Lilith growing up poor with a problematic father could naturally fuel a fair lot of angst and social defense mechanisms. She stopped ballet and dance classes in the next town where her aunt had been teaching her since a tot. Her bubbling laugh became a huff that went with a new form of dry-witted and biting humor that knew little filter. And though she was blossoming from pretty, bright-eyed girl into uncanny beauty, she started dressing in all black and laying on the eyeliner with an attitude to match.
Others that knew better, the ones that watched quiet and knowing from afar, though, they knew it was the effect of the Glimmer. Her high school shop teacher noticed it first-- she'd always been interested in tearing things apart and putting them back together and he was an old man who'd lived in the town of Gray Harbor his whole life. When he noticed her repairing or altering projects with his own minor ability to sense exactly how she was going about matters, he pulled her aside for a test that would prove not only to him, but to Lilith what she was capable of.
Unfortunately, she didn't do anything great with it, but she also had trouble leaving it alone. Using the Glimmer came with dark feelings and nightmares and consequences, certain urges that were hard to sate as a generally non-violent personality. At eighteen, frustrated and ready to run away, she did just that and bounced from city to city using drugs to dampen what remained of her abilities away from her home. Though she largely kept to herself, each place had a small handful of alternative-minded friends, and in Miami, one of them was a private and professional dominatrix.
Suddenly, Lilith had both a good income and an outlet for her dark urges, and she was uncanny at laying on pain while leaving little in way of marks when client time was up. And though she never had sex with her clients in trade for pay, five years of feeding those urges was taking a toll on her and turning her into something she didn't necessarily want to be. So when her father called with a fairly recent problem about the pawn being financially on the skids, she decided to go back home and fix things.
Her recent homecoming came with more debt than her father actually explained. Essentially, rebuilding the business after a fire had eaten the equity, and his gambling debts were out of control. The local criminal syndicate had him over a barrel and was about to pull the whole shop from him to launder goods and money, which would leave him with nothing. Enacting tough love, Lilith took over the shop and promised payments to the debtors in installments. However, that also left her railroaded with the occasional favor of laundering fake money or fencing stolen goods as a matter of paying good faith and interest accrual. So while she's not exactly a career criminal, she's definitely an abettor with little say in it for the time being.
Currently, as far as her abilities go, Lilith is far from educated in the way of Glimmer despite raw power. Mostly, she uses her spiritual aspect to fix or restore old items and increases pawn profit margin. If she applied herself, she could be immensely useful and powerful. And maybe she is in spite of it, but mostly, she harbors complicated feelings over the whole of her abilities. Sometimes they're too much for her, too great without proper honing, and she's only really scratched the surface of what she can actually do.
Standing at decent height, a slight avianesque bone structure frames this woman and steals some of her perceived size, playing trade off with an air of delicacy. Her overall body, however, is flush with elegantly lacing feminine lines and flaring curves. Deep brunette hair falls about her shoulders and down the back with layering, mostly fine and straight with sleek shine and small flip of curl. Wide eyes are played to highlight, finely kept brows pairing with a thick swatch of dark, curling lashes; colored deeply blue, the irises occasionally catch light to lean them toward a rarer natural state of violet. The bridge of her nose is small and high with defined sculpting sweep, lips full with subdued bowing above the small point of her chin.
