Branch & Bole is a horticulture shop, modest sized but decently appointed. It focuses primarily on plants, gardening implements, and books, but there's a growing section dedicated to 'garden paraphernalia' in true PNW fashion (not August's doing, he blames his employees for that one). Though non-native species are offered, they specialize in native plants.

Out on a Limb is an arboricultural service run out of Branch & Bole. Available by appointment and for emergency situations, if you have a tree problem, small or large, they have a solution.

Hospitals Suck: August hates hospitals. Like, really...really hates them. It takes a couple of Xanax to get him into Addington Memorial.

Pain Sensitive: Owing to his time served in Bosnia, August has a lot of problems with the 'injury empathy' aspect of Spirit; sensing wounds, especially severe ones, can trigger him in a variety of ways. Healing severe wounds is likewise difficult for him (though he sure runs around doing it a lot), and hurting people with Spirit is especially difficult. Note, hurting things which aren't people, not an issue.

War Wounds: August has a lot of orthopedic implants in him, thanks to Bosnia. They get achy.

Property Damage: Due to his difficulty with actually hurting people, August is much more likely to break objects with Spirit when he gets upset. That's not too often, but when it happens, things can get smashed up pretty good.

Thanksgiving has passed, and that means one thing: time to pick out your Christmas Trees from the Christmas Tree farm! One of the more popular farms is on the edges of Firefly Forest, a 'live' Christmas tree farm where you pick out a still-in-the-ground tree and its cut down and prepped for you right there to strap to your car or trailer and drive on home. The farm becomes a bit of an event, much like the pumpkin patch in the Park; there's coffee and tea and cocoa, roasted chestnuts and Christmas cookies.

And this year, the trees are big, and healthy! They've never had trees this nice looking! Come pick out a tree, or just enjoy the coffee and cocoa and ambiance of the forest in winter.

And maybe find out why the trees are looking so nice...

August has five tattoos: two on his back, one on his belly, one on his left upper-chest, and one on his left thigh.

The belly tattoo covers a midline incision scar, and is a yellow, black, and white orb weaver spider paired with a bloodroot flower, stem, and leaves.

The upper-left chest tattoo is a pair of figs, one whole and one halved, with fig leaves and blossoms. It's hand-sized and located just below his collarbone; the center of the halved fig covers a puncture wound scar.

The thigh tattoo is a pair of ravens, one holding a green and mauve helleborus in its claws, the other holding a sprig of oak leaves. The trailing edge of this tattoo is sometimes visible if he's wearing shorts. The helleborus flower covers a puncture wound scar, and the ravens cover a surgical scar.

The larger back tattoo is an elk skull with various plants wound in the antlers and roots dangling down from them. The skull's horns span his shoulders, and the nose point reaches to almost the middle of his back. The smaller, upper back tattoo runs along his shoulders, incorporating two scars, one each on his left and right shoulders. They've been used to form the backbones of a series of vines: leafless, thorny bouganvillea with violet brachts and pale white flowers, brilliant green hops, heavy with golden bunches, and bittersweet, its brilliant red berries set in papery yellow sheaths on thicker, brown vines winding among the rest. At the center of the two lengths of vines is a brilliant ceanothus silkmoth, brick red and cream and dark brown with brilliant white markings.

A new addition on his left bicep, impossible to miss for how colorful it is, is a brilliant fancy guppy, about the size of his palm. Thanks, Emily! >.<

There are probably cellphone cam pics of August shirtless from a few ill-considered bets, but in general he's almost always in a shirt and cargos or jeans, so they're not typically visible.

He's also a hard case who wants everyone to believe he's unsalvageable, but the joke's on him, I know a decent guy who's had a rough time when I see one.

Joseph

Astronaut who sailed into town. Decent guy, easy to talk to. Writes, though weirdly we haven't had a chance to discuss that much.

Juniper

Fellow plant person, also with the Gift. Not that I'd wish this place's oddities on anyone, but I'll take all the help we can get.

Very Gifted woman who just needs some stability in her existence. (But don't we all.)

The weird thing is it's the Glimmer that wrecked me when I was in Sarajevo and got her tormented when she was a kid which put us in each other's orbits. I guess that's just how the Art works, though. (Painfully, beautifully, and never how you expect it.) And even if it IS the Art that did this, the chances I would have found anyone else willing to deal with everything I've got going on don't seem that high, so I'm not about to second guess this. We exchanged rings and vows and broke a glass; that it all started and proceeded in the strangest possible way doesn't change that my heart is hers.

System Information

Botanist - August is a card-carrying botanist, complete with a PhD, published papers, and a couple of plant guides under his belt.

Former military - August was medically discharged from the US Army in 1995 after serving for 3 years. He was a member of the 502nd Infantry Regiment.

PNW Native - Though he's not from Gray Harbor, August is every bit the PNW native, having grown up in Portland and gone to school in Corvallis and Seattle. He was a Forester for the US Forestry Service assigned to Hoh Rain Forest for several years before moving to Gray Harbor.

Business Owner - August runs a small horticulture shop, Branch & Bole, and an arboriculture business, Out on a Limb. Have a tree that's giving you problems? Need some fertilizer? Need a lot of fertilizer? Some seeds? Cuttings? Something ordered? (He has a few employees, but it never hurts to ask if he's hiring.)

Hunter/Gatherer/Gardener - August doesn't like eating food he didn't obtain himself. He does a fair bit of hunting and angling, and grows a lot of his own herbs, vegetables, and fruits in a garden.

Weird Guy in the Woods - August lives in a modest A-frame somewhat outside of town off the beaten path, which is precisely how he likes it: not near a lot of people. He has a small menagerie of animals: two minipigs, four goats, some guard geese, and a few chickens and ducks.

Oh, Shiny - For those who Glimmer, August is hard to miss.

August Josephus Roen was born in Portland, Oregon, to a poor family living in a trailer park along the train tracks. His parents encouraged him in school, raising him and his sisters as best they could under the circumstances. As the oldest, it was somewhat on him to raise their fortunes (not as far as his parents were concerned, but society sure made that clear to him). His grades were good but not full ride scholarship worthy, and he wasn't good enough in sports to get into college that way either. He opted to join the Army, since at least it gave him steady pay he could send back home, and took him off his family's hands so he wasn't a burden.

And then the Balkans War happened, and August was part of the contingent of US Army personnel sent to aid UNPROFOR. Their stated mission was to protect civilians, hospitals, and the like, and for August's part he never found himself in a direct firefight. He did, however, help people out from under sniper fire, assist in defending refugees, and protect more than a few medical centers. He was medically discharged after almost three years as one of the few survivors of a building which collapsed in the wake of heavy shelling in Sarajevo. He recovered, but still suffers from the occasional bout of tinnitus, the last remnants of the head injury he sustained.

And that wasn't all he came back with. Something happened to him out there, and during the war itself he couldn't really define it. His superiors had even commented on it, that he had an easier time finding people who were hidden--both refugees and snipers--which he could only put down to hearing them. And he was, just not in the way he assumed: he could feel their injuries, sense their anger and fear. He also seemed to know any time heavy equipment was on the move, like tanks and trucks, before anyone else heard or felt it. Everyone just assumed he was lucky, and he had no reason to disbelieve them. (There was a flip side to this, which was that being in hospitals was acutely painful, everyone's wounds screaming at him in technicolor, but he put it down to being 19 and out of his depth.)

But it kept happening after he came back. It was subtle, at first; the sense that he knew how people felt about something no matter what their expression or words suggested; that someone was about to make a bad move in traffic as their anger or panic made his fingers tingle in anticipation; that plants or people were sick and needed help. He could almost never see these things, and yet, he knew they were there. Then it got to the point where it was happening all the time.

He distracted himself by going to college. The GI bill helped there; he was able to go all the way to a PhD in Botany, first at Oregon State and then the UW in Seattle. He avoided hospitals at all costs. Just getting too close to one could make him nauseated.

He joined the US Forest Service to get away from people. Obviously what was happening to him was PTSD. And maybe some of it was, but not all of it. Either way, isolation seemed to calm it down, and he passed those years in relative peace and quiet, in remote assignments in the Pacific Northwest. He wrote a few plant guides, kept in touch with his parents and sisters.

Three years ago he was driving through Gray Harbor on his way to Olympic National Park and he had to pull over. He had to. There was something about the area he couldn't ignore. After being unable to ignore what he was feeling for weeks, he scraped together enough money from book sales and his savings to start a small horticulture and arborist business. He has a sum total of five employees, but the way the windstorms knock down trees in the winter, and the hot summers have ruined people's attempts at gardening, it hasn't been too hard to stay in afloat. They run a modest sized shop that sells fertilizer in bulk, various seeds and live plants, and of course, they'll handle your tree problems, large or small. (Mostly large in this area.)

Broad-shouldered, solidly built, and a bit over six feet, August could grace the cover of magazines describing life in the Pacific Northwest. He's square-faced and strong-jawed, with deep-set, hazel eyes in a weathered face and the sort of pale skin that gets ruddy red-brown if it sees enough sun. He wears his black-brown, silvering hair in an undercut most of time, which reveals a few dots of white on the left side of his head which may be from scarring. His neatly trimmed beard's gone a bit salt and pepper these days, which makes him look somewhat older than he really is, but one could guess he's mid-to-late 40s. He doesn't smile all that often, adopting a neutral expression which suggests approaching him for anything other than business-related requests is a questionable enterprise at best. He typically wears jeans and work boots with either waffle knit, long-sleeve Henleys, graphic t-shirts, or flannel shirts of varying designs. On his left hand ring finger is a ring made of titanium, gold, and blond wood.

This isn't too much of a surprise in late winter, as the fog is often heaviest in Spring and Fall. Still, this is particularly dense fog and mist. Meteorologists are astounded, and predicting it will last at least a handful of days, maybe even a week. Visibility in some places is reduced to only a few feet.%r%rBut this is Gray Harbor, so this is no ordinary mist. Anyone with Glimmer can feel something is up. Worse yet, they can see, hear, and smell it too. They're sensing things in the fog, extraordinary and unnatural things: dead and Lost people, mysterious beings, smells and sounds from other places and times, impossible landscapes lingering just out of view.
